We are now seeking an experienced Payroll Team Leader to join our team. This is a great opportunity for an experienced payroller to take the next step in their career.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, coach and develop a team of staff to deliver high‑quality payroll services, promoting an inclusive and collaborative team culture.
  • Oversee the end‑to‑end processing of complex, high‑volume payrolls across multiple public sector clients and terms and conditions.
  • Ensure full compliance with HMRC regulations, pension scheme rules and audit requirements.
  • Maintain up‑to‑date knowledge of payroll legislation and public sector pay policy.
  • Maintain robust internal controls and support external and internal audits.
  • Contribute to the development and maintenance of standard operating procedures and knowledge resources.
  • Foster and develop a proactive and customer‑centric approach to service delivery, including delivering high‑quality end‑user experiences.
  • Be the first point of contact for complaints and escalations via Customer Support Services, providing advice in line with policy and best practice.
  • Build and maintain strong relationships with fellow Team Leads, internal stakeholders, 3rd parties and clients to deliver seamless end‑to‑end service.
  • Lead the team through change, building and supporting a resilient team.
  • Champion a culture of continuous improvement, driving process improvements to enhance operational efficiency and service quality.

Qualifications & Experience

  • Demonstrable experience in payroll and shared services and ability to prioritise own and team workload in a fast‑paced environment to meet deadlines and SLAs.
  • Experience of leading and developing a small‑to‑medium team.
  • First‑class oral and written communication skills.
  • Strong stakeholder management and influencing skills.
  • High level of numeracy, accuracy and attention to detail.
  • Experience of problem‑solving and decision‑making in a fast‑paced environment.
  • Demonstrates and fosters a strong customer service orientation.
  • Process improvement mindset.
  • Proficient in HR systems (Oracle, Workday).
  • Strong knowledge of UK payroll legislation and statutory requirements.
  • Maths and English GCSE, grade A‑C or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to explain payroll information to non‑payroll colleagues and end users.
  • CIPP qualification or equivalent level of payroll experience would be advantageous.
  • Knowledge of payroll best practice.
  • Experience in management of third‑party suppliers.

Successful candidates may be required to undergo Security Clearance (National Security Vetting) as part of their employment. To meet these standards, applicants must normally have lived in the UK for at least the last five years and be able to satisfy background, identity and criminal record checks.
