This investigator scientist post sits in the Biological Mass Spectrometry and Proteomics Facility at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology, serving research groups across cell and molecular biology. The work centres on running quantitative proteomics workflows, maintaining mass spectrometers and reporting results to users. It is distinct for its breadth, covering high-throughput labelled and label-free work, phosphoproteomics, and interaction analysis by hydrogen/deuterium exchange and crosslinking. Fit depends on a PhD and prior facility proteomics experience.

What the job involves

  • Prepare samples for quantitative and structural proteomics pipelines
  • Execute quantitative proteomics workflows, including labelled, label-free, phosphoproteomics, HDX and crosslinking MS
  • Maintain and troubleshoot mass spectrometers and associated instruments with quality control
  • Analyse data and communicate findings and experimental advice to facility users
  • Work with the facility bioinformatician on data analysis and database searches
  • Manage multiple projects and give progress updates to users and the Facility Head
  • Coordinate with the Facility Head on workflow changes and the facility's strategic direction
  • Contribute to publications and grant applications through data analysis and figures
  • Train students, postdocs and others in sample preparation
  • Keep accurate records in line with facility SOPs and good practice
  • Keep up to date with developments in mass spectrometry proteomics
  • Present work at internal seminars and external meetings

Qualifications

  • PhD in a relevant biological subject, analytical chemistry, biochemistry or a related field

Experience

  • Postdoctoral experience in an academic or industrial mass spectrometry facility focused on proteomics sample analysis
  • Sample preparation within shared mass spectrometry facilities across a broad range of biological subjects
  • Proven delivery of mass spectrometry or proteomics projects
  • Track record of research, including communicating at national and international conferences

Skills & knowledge

  • Significant experience with TMT, SILAC and label-free sample preparation workflows
  • Significant experience with all stages of mass spectrometry data acquisition, including instrument maintenance, troubleshooting, quality control and method optimisation
  • Significant experience across a wide range of mass spectrometers and mass analysers
  • Significant experience quantifying protein post-translational modifications such as phosphorylation and ubiquitination
  • Experience analysing labelled and label-free quantitative proteomics datasets
  • Experience keeping reproducible records of analysis for each project

Checks & eligibility

  • Appropriate security screening or vetting for the role

Nice to have

  • Significant experience in targeted protein quantification workflows
  • Experience studying protein dynamics using hydrogen/deuterium exchange
  • Experience in crosslinking mass spectrometry analysis
