Overview

This 2026 Experienced Apprentice Programme will report to the Engineering Trainees Team Leader and will work based in our Bidder Street or Falconwood office. You will be a permanent employee.

UK Power Networks operates and maintains three electricity distribution networks, delivering power to 19 million people across London, the South East and East of England. Alongside the three Ofgem regulated networks, UK Power Networks has an un-regulated arm, UK Power Networks Services, which builds, manages and maintains high‑voltage private electrical networks for owners of major infrastructure. Clients include London\’s five main airports, High Speed 1, Network Rail and London Underground. UK Power Networks is a registered Employer-Provider with the ESFA, and apprenticeships are part funded by the Apprenticeship Levy. UK Power Networks has over 145,000km of underground cables and over 190,000km of overhead lines across its network, helping to distribute 30% of the UK\’s electricity. The Experienced Apprenticeship is a two‑year training programme accredited by the IET and endorsed by EU Skills, offering a pathway to become a trained and qualified craftsperson to work safely in the electrical distribution industry.

Craft roles

  • Cable Jointer — installs, connects, and repairs underground cables to maintain a reliable power supply; works with low and high voltage cables and equipment, following safety standards and procedures.
  • Overhead Linesperson — installs, maintains and repairs overhead power lines and poles; works at heights to ensure safe and reliable distribution; inspects, troubleshoots, and responds to power outages.
  • Electrical Fitter — installs, maintains, and repairs electrical equipment and systems within substations; works with high‑voltage apparatus such as transformers, switchgear and circuit breakers; performs routine inspections and fault troubleshooting.

Apprentice details

Apprentices will be provided with overnight accommodation while studying at UK Power Networks Training Centres or with our Training Providers. Some courses may require staying away from home for the duration of the course. You will use your personal vehicle or public transport to travel between training locations; if you have a personal vehicle with business insurance you may claim travel expenses/mileage. Training may take place at practical training centres and educational facilities across the UK, with possible travel out of region and overnight stays when required. Accommodation and meal allowances are provided if you stay away from home for training.

The apprenticeship lasts two years (indicative timescale) towards achievement of a Level 3 Power Industry Craft Person Apprenticeship, developing skills and behaviours for your designated craft. End Point Assessment (EUIAS) will assess Skills, Knowledge and Behaviours, and you will gain certificates of competency specific to your craft before becoming a qualified craftsperson. Training will include internal and external courses, on-site placements and college‑based study across the 2 year period.

You will attract a salary of £37,226.00 and a bonus of 3%. Apprentices will follow the Level 3 Power Industry Craftsperson Apprenticeship Standards and, depending on the role offered, may pursue:

  • Power industry substation fitter
  • Power industry overhead linesperson
  • Power industry distribution cable jointer
  • The apprenticeship includes a City and Guilds Level 2 in Electrical Power Engineering – Distribution and Transmission (Technical Knowledge) to be undertaken at an external provider college in Basingstoke.

Apprentices are expected to perform their craft responsibilities safely, follow UK Power Networks safe working policies, and undertake activities at training centres or provider sites. Training may require time away from home, with accommodation and meals provided when applicable.
