This Ops Telecoms Technician will report to the Operational Telecoms Senior Project Engineer and will work within Network Operations based in our Nelson Street, London office. You will be a permanent employee.

Responsibilities:

  • Maintain a high standard of safety management and perform safety procedures correctly.
  • Conduct wiring and other SCADA related activities on site, usually solo, implementing modifications or repairs.
  • Deliver upgrade and improvement work on operational SCADA equipment within Grid, Primary and Secondary substations, including configuration, testing and integration of SMART Grid solutions and SCADA interfaces.
  • Construct Telecontrol Equipment Cubicles (TEC) and other SCADA equipment in the Ops Telecoms workshops located at Nelson Street, East Ham.
  • Installation and maintenance of:
    • Copper and fibre optic communication circuits
    • Radio communication equipment and antennas
    • VSAT & BGAN satellite communication equipment
    • Telecontrol equipment and associated wiring to substation plant and equipment
    • Inter‑tripping and protection communications equipment
  • Help deliver annual Ops Telecoms work programme following the network management plan.
  • Operate Spectrum Analysers, Oscar signal generation equipment, and handle portable tools and equipment; maintain, calibrate and test them periodically; equipment value exceeds £40k.
  • Ensure stock levels are maintained through accurate replenishment and repair.
  • Support our Command Vehicle, located at Nelson Street, ensuring safe deployment and training of other staff during a deployment usually to the site of a major network incident.
  • In‑depth knowledge of SCADA and its application in real‑time control systems connected to live switchgear, transformers and other substation equipment and apparatus.
  • Awareness of inter‑tripping and basic protection systems.
  • Technically electrically competent; City and Guilds 2322 in Electronic and Electrical theory.
  • Perform build or repair tasks with an understanding of schematic and wiring diagrams.
  • Desirable accreditations: PASMA, IPAF, VSAT alignment, GE T5000 RTU, NRSWA, Type A, B & C confined space access.
  • Proficient in using laptop computers running software tools for configuration and testing of complex comms and SCADA equipment.
  • Experience with the PowerOn network management system with Telecontrol Technician access privileges.
  • Demonstrate use of hand tools, power tools and test equipment and install complex wiring within substation equipment.
  • Risk assess and manage other staff and contractors in substations.
  • Good understanding of policies relating to network standards, Health & Safety and electricity regulations; know where to reference a policy.
  • Experience with CDM regulations and ISO9001 quality processes.
  • Familiar with copper and fibre optic jointing and basic manual handling techniques.
  • Substation access up to 132 kV requires competency certificate under UK Power Networks safety rules.
  • Aware of cyber security precautions for SCADA services.
  • Knowledge of IP and other SCADA protocols; use diagnostic tools such as Wireshark.
  • Experience with fault diagnostics and logical implementation of fault finding techniques.
  • Full driving licence required.

Salary: £56,576 per annum, bonus 3%, Inner London weighting £6,319.03, network payment £743.79.
