This rapid response technician will report to the field staff supervisor and will work within Network Operations based in our southern area office operating across Crawley, Lewes and surrounding areas. You will be a permanent employee in our UK Power Networks team. You will attract a salary of £43,736 and a bonus of 3%. If you are successful, you will need to undertake a medical and DBS reference check.

Job Purpose: The successful candidate will be responsible for the fast initial response to 'no supply' calls, assisting in the restoration of LV and HV supplies on the UK Power Networks distribution system and other abnormalities which occur such as high earth loop impedance, flickering supplies and other safety critical incidents.

Principal Accountabilities:

  • Ensure rapid and safe response to emergency calls as directed by Fore hamlet Network Operations or the local office.
  • Provide regular updates via verbal and mobile electronic hand held devices following procedures.
  • Provide timely and accurate information on fault conditions, carry out initial fault location and liaise with local staff on repairs.
  • Investigate voltage complaints and install test equipment as required.
  • The restoration of HV & LV supplies.
  • Testing and switching on the HV & LV network - and understanding the results of the tests and acting appropriately.
  • Understanding operational and 1:500 diagrams.
  • Use of appropriate IT equipment including TDR, tough pad and FFE equipment.

Nature & Scope: The person undertaking this role plays a vital role in the safe and timely restoration of LV & HV supplies. The Company is regulated by various guidelines, and this role is particularly important in ensuring successful compliance with Customer Minutes Lost and Customer Interruption targets. The job holder may be required to work at any location within the UK Power Networks area, initially within the South East Region.

The successful candidate will be required to demonstrate a responsible and safe approach to unplanned hazardous situations. They will be required to deal professionally with members of the public, emergency services and local authorities when representing UK Power Networks in emergency situations. They will work as part of a team covering a 24 hour shift rota pattern.

Competencies, Knowledge, Experience and Qualifications: The successful candidate will preferably be authorised for HV and LV switching and fuse replacement, and if possible that they will have developed metering skills. Training will be offered to all staff to be able to identify and/or rectify customer internal wiring/metering issues, LV network faults, installation of temporary LV generators and HV switching to restore supplies. Technically competent, they are likely to be qualified up to a minimum of C&G 232 or equivalent, ideally up to ONC/HNC or equivalent in Electrical Engineering.

  • Hold a full Clean UK Driving Licence.

Desirable: Located in the area or able to travel to the area in good time, or able to relocate.
