Embedded within NPg’s in‑house, project team‑based environment. Location: Across NPg licence area – Castleford, Hull, Sheffield, York, Stockton, Penshaw & Shiremoor.

Reporting to: Lead Protection Engineer / Design Manager

Position Overview

To deliver high‑quality Protection Application Design Engineering Services supporting Northern Powergrid’s capital, reinforcement, and connection programmes up to and including 132 kV. The engineer will produce, verify, and integrate protection, control & SCADA designs that ensure the continued safety, reliability, and compliance of NPg’s distribution system.

Key Responsibilities / Deliverables

  • Protection Design: Develop detailed protection application designs for feeders, transformers, and busbars at 11 kV–132 kV, including customer interface schemes.
  • Logic & Settings: Prepare connection and tripping logic diagrams, relay configuration and setting files, IEC 61850 and DNP3 communications, and programmable logic documentation.
  • Equipment Specification: Specify CTs/VTs, relays, panels, multicore cabling, and wiring systems to manufacturer and NPg standards.
  • Standards Compliance: Apply ENA TS, ENATS, BEBS, TPS and Elexon metering standards; ensure full compliance with NPg procedures and CDM 2015.
  • Review & Assurance: Review designs by ICPs and third parties; provide technical assurance and constructive feedback.
  • Testing Support: Attend / witness FAT and SAT activities; verify relay logic and interface performance.
  • Project Delivery: Deliver to agreed time, cost and quality targets; maintain accurate timesheet and cost‑allocation records.
  • Team Collaboration: Liaise closely with NPg design, commissioning, and project teams; contribute to coordination meetings and design reviews.
  • Mentoring & Knowledge Sharing: Support junior engineers in protection design methodologies, relay coordination, and NPg systems.
  • Safety & CDM Duties: Act as Designer under CDM Regulations to identify and mitigate design hazards.

Key Competencies & Skills

  • Expert knowledge of distribution protection principles and relay coordination up to 132 kV.
  • Strong CAD skills (AutoCAD 2021 / MicroStation V8i)
  • Familiarity with protection relays (Siemens, GE, Schneider, ABB etc.)
  • Competence in relay configuration, logic programming, and IEC 61850 engineering
  • Understanding of SCADA integration, teleprotection & communications
  • Ability to interpret schematics, settings schedules and manufacturer specifications
  • Excellent report‑writing and communication skills
  • Capable of balancing multiple schemes and adapting to changing priorities

Qualifications / Experience

  • Degree (preferred) or HNC/HND in Electrical Engineering or Power Systems.
  • 5 to 10+ years’ experience in UK distribution or transmission protection application design
  • Proven delivery of schemes for switchgear, transformers, feeders and generation connections up to 132 kV
  • Demonstrated knowledge of ENA, IEC and NPg standards and policies
  • Experience with network connections including embedded generation and legacy scheme integration
  • Valid UK driving license (required for travel to NPg sites)

Authorisation & Training Requirements

  • Eligible for and maintain NPg Operational Authorisations to: access operational substations unsupervised; supervise others who require access
