Please note that we are looking for a mix of locations for our grid connection engineer roles. UKNS is hiring two roles; one is remote, and the other is based in the Bishops Stortford offices. We are flexible on working patterns and locations, offering family-friendly options.

We are seeking an enthusiastic and innovative Grid Connections Engineer to join our industry-leading team of grid experts. The core of this exciting role is to support our customers in getting connected to the grid from EV charging hubs at Low Voltage right up to the largest UK data centres who measure their connections in Gigawatts. This role combines technical detailed power systems engineering with a customer-focused drive to deliver outstanding and innovative solutions.

On the technical side, you will be using cutting-edge power systems modelling software (ETAP, SINCAL, and IPSA) to model high voltage and extra high voltage networks to identify points of connections, as well as any required reinforcements. You will combine this expert network knowledge with our in-house designed and manufactured control systems to offer solutions that are not available anywhere else.

What you'll be doing:

  • Using power systems modelling software to identify electrical capacity (thermal, voltage, and fault level) on distribution and transmission networks.
  • Creating and maintaining strong relationships internally and with customers, DNOs, IDNOs, and ICPs.
  • Using our in-house design and manufactured grid control systems to design innovative grid connection solutions for our customers.
  • Managing the end-to-end grid connections process and providing expert support for our customers.
  • Preparing engineering drawings and technical reports (grid compliance, single line diagrams).
  • Attending industry events to represent UK Networks Services.
  • Assessing connection offers for technical, regulatory, and commercial compliance and risk.

What we're looking for:

  • Significant experience in LV & HV electrical distribution network design.
  • Strong background in the technical DNO connection offer process (using power systems software or other tools to identify and assess points of connection).
  • Experience of both demand and generation connections, HV and EHV.
  • Detailed knowledge of the connections processes and associated standards (CCCMS, ECCR).
  • Experience of NERS design approval process with DNO/IDNO/ICP is an advantage.
  • Experience using power systems tools (WinDebut, IPSA, ETAP, SINCAL, ELEK Cable HV, ELEK Safe Grid, AutoCAD or their equivalents).
  • Ability to communicate well with senior management and customers alike.
  • Strong technical and mathematical skills.
  • Ability to self-start and work without direct supervision.
  • Ability to structure work, record keep, and support company certification by working with good governance.
  • Right to work in the UK - we are unable to sponsor applicants for employment visa status.
  • Ability to travel: Full, clean driving licence.

Key Qualifications:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering (HNC/HND considered).
  • Professional Registration is an advantage (IEng/CEng).
  • IOSH Working safety or managing safely is an advantage.
  • Formal training in power systems modelling is an advantage.

Please note this role will require some business travel within the UK for client and site meetings, where all costs (travel, accommodation, subsistence) are paid.
