About the role

Defence is developing a new Armed Forces entry route for civilians to utilise their specialist skills, the roles will also be open to veterans and reservists. This new pathway will help the nation develop its connection to the Armed Forces. The ZigZag pilot will build wider understanding and experience of Defence through the unique experiences and personal development opportunities that can be gained from working in the Armed Forces.

The Defence Serious Crime Unit (DSCU) is an independent, professional, and global Service Police force, with authority to investigate serious crime alleged to have been committed by persons subject to Service law in the UK and overseas. You can find more information about DSCU here .

This role offers individuals a choice in mobility levels. The nature of investigation work and your role duties mean you must be willing and able to be on duty, in person, one weekend per month.

• No Mobility commitment role is office and crime scene based. However, there’s opportunity for occasional home working for writing reports and administrative tasks. Duties normally fall within standard weekday working hours – it is rare to be called in outside of these hours. However, you will be expected to work flexibly to support the outputs of the team. Occasional after-hours work may be required.
• For Partial mobility commitments you will be expected to cover a broader region assisting the wider team when required, this may be UK wide but will not be more than 35 nights out of bed per year
• For Full mobility Commitments you can expect a mixture of the above within a defined base but deployable to investigate crime wherever our service personnel require us

Please note that salary and benefits are aligned to the level of mobility chosen with higher levels attracting enhanced remuneration and benefits in recognition of the broader contribution to defence priorities.

To be eligible you must either be a British Citizen, a Citizen of the Irish Republic and undergo security clearance by the National Vetting Service.

This position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

This role is being offered on a fixed term basis . The role is subject to assignment duration for 3 years.

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Serious Crime supervisor to lead junior investigators, provide mentorship, advice, and guidance to deliver, thorough, timely, and ethical investigations. This role requires a results-driven individual with a passion for high standards, teamwork, planning, and professional compliance. The successful candidate will play a pivotal role in dealing with complex investigations, assessing risks, and driving efficiency within a fast-paced and high-impact environment.

There may be a requirement to travel within the UK and work temporarily from another UK location (no longer than 3 weeks). You will be able to claim expenses. There may be a voluntary opportunity for Partial Mobility and No Mobility commitments for a short-term deployment overseas (2-3 weeks) during the 3-year contract, subject to medical and fitness requirements being met. (Full Mobility Commitments should expect this).
