The Defence College for Military Capability Integration (DCMCI) is one of the key operating units of the Defence Academy (DefAc). DCMCI trains the UK’s Armed Forces as well as Civil Servants, International Allies and Industry Partners, focusing on the ‘technological edge’, leveraging the technology and information necessary to thrive in an increasingly interconnected, complex and ambiguous strategic and operating environment.
This role is within the Defence Cyber Academy (DCA) in DCMCI. The Cyber Trainer role is to provide knowledge and skills with practical learning outcomes as a primary deliverer of training for the Defence Cyber Academy’s Cyber Foundation Pathway and Cyber Role training. The role additionally assists in the maintenance and management of all supporting materials, equipment, and classrooms. Role holders are expected to collaborate as required in the development of new learning outcomes.
Main responsibilities of the Cyber Trainer role(s) are:
- To provide learning outcomes as a Defence Cyber Academy (DCA) trainer, in support of the Cyber Foundation Pathway (CFP) and Cyber Role Training (CyRT). Such learning may be delivered in an online or traditional classroom environment.
- Provide suitable lesson planning to support the learning outputs.
- Support the design, development, organisation, management, delivery, and continuous improvement of the curriculum and future courses as they are developed.
- As a DCA Trainer, maintain relevant learning materials and configure teaching environments as required.
- Support JSP822 documentation requirements as appropriate and keep appropriate records of learning outputs as required.
- Support the compilation of appropriate feedback and statistics and undertaking observations and internal validation as required.
- Assess other learning programs for suitability of use by DCA in support of requested training or related tasks.
- Undertake learning and development and upskilling as required. This could involve engaging in activities pertinent to the role to maintain currency, corporate knowledge, personal skills. This includes mandatory training.
Person specification:
DCA trainers are responsible for building the cadre of suitably qualified personnel to support the National Cyber Force, Defence Digital Operations and single-Service Cyber units. This is achieved through the delivery of the Cyber Foundation Pathway (CFP) series of courses and the newly developed Cyber Role Training (CyRT). Applicants will be expected to directly support the delivery outputs of the CFP and CyRT by delivering high quality training. As might be imagined, this is a fast-moving area with frequently updated policy and guidance; DCA is a dynamic and exciting place to work. Upskilling in both technical understanding and educational practice is a constant.
Essential Criteria:
- Direct experience of training others, preferably in blended delivery methods.
- Experience of maintaining documentation for learning activities.
- Excellent presentation and communication skills (both written and verbal), strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise, work under pressure and meet strict deadlines.
- Experience of engaging with others outside of your normal organisational boundaries is vital to this post with its wide-ranging stakeholder mix.
Desirable Criteria:
- Candidates' experience of training others should be supported by a recognised industry or defence training qualification (DTTT, DTC, DHET, TAP Trainer Diploma, CIPD etc), although a willingness to gain formal recognition soon after joining the team will be accepted.
- Experience of managing blended learning platforms (Moodle/DLE etc) is highly desirable.
- Applicants should have an active interest in cyber; this will be explored at interview.
- Candidates will possess excellent IT skills; ideal if in technical cyber areas (SANS, CISCO, CompTIA, etc).
- Hold or obtain a Basic Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check.

Highly competitive pension scheme. Flexi-time scheme upon completion of 6 months service if new to the Civil Service or the Line Manager has the ability to adopt flexible working sooner than the 6 month period.
With Line Manager agreement move to an alternative Working Patterns (there are 9). 25 days paid annual leave rising (1 day per year) to 30 days upon completion of 5 years’ service. If by chance you have previously completed service in the Public Sector in the past 5 years, you may be eligible to request 30 days leave immediately. (Evidence will be required).
In addition to annual leave you will be entitled to 8 Public Bank Holidays per year. Professional and Personal Development of skills. Minimum of 18 Days Special Paid Leave in a rolling 12-month period for Public Duties commitments (such as a Magistrate). Special Paid Leave for community volunteering up to 12 days a year for Special Constables and 6 days a year for other volunteering. Enhanced parental and adoption leave.
Shrivenham has good travel links with free car parking. Other facilities are a Sports & Social club, a Gym complex, stables, a Golf Course and onsite Mess & Retail shops.
A Civil Service pension with an employer contribution of 28.97%. Where business needs allow, some roles may be suitable for a combination of office and home-based working. This is a non-contractual arrangement where all office-based employees will be expected to spend a minimum of 60% of their working time in office, subject to capacity and any required workplace adjustments.
The post does not offer relocation expenses. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
