About the job

Defence is developing a new Armed Forces entry route (The ZigZag Career Pathway) for civilians to utilise their specialist skills, the roles will also be open to veterans and reservists. The ZigZag Pilot will build wider understanding and experience of Defence through the unique experiences and personal development opportunities that can be gained from working in the Armed Forces.

As part of the MOD, the Adjutant General\’s Corps – Staff and Personnel Support (AGC(SPS)) branch ensure that the Army is ready to deploy at a moment\’s notice by managing its people, finances, and information. AGC(SPS) soldiers and officers are attached to every Army unit in the UK and overseas. You can find more information about the AGC(SPS)

To be eligible you must either be a British citizen, a Citizen of the Irish Republic and undergo security clearance by the National Vetting Service.

This role offers individuals a choice in Partial or Full mobility:

  • The No Mobility commitment role is office based, however, there may be an opportunity for occasional home working for writing reports and administrative tasks. Duties normally fall within standard weekday working hours – it is rare to be called in outside of these hours. However, you will be expected to work flexibly to meet support the outputs of the team and there may be some ad hoc out of hours requirements.
  • For Partial Mobility commitments you will be expected to fulfil wider duties deploying on exercise with the detachment or occasionally covering a broader region assisting the wider team when required, this may be UK wide but will not be more than 35 nights out of bed per year.
  • For Full Mobility commitments you can expect a mixture of the above within a defined base but deployable to support defence wherever our service personnel require us.

The position is advertised at 37 hours per week.

This role is being offered on a fixed term basis. The role is subject to assignment duration for 3 years.

Job Description

We are seeking a dynamic and experienced Business Support Manager to lead the routine management and oversee organisational HR and financial support to approx. 700 people. As part of the admin team, the Business Support Manager (Detachment Commander) needs to be driven, professional and a team player.

The Business Support Manager is responsible for leading and managing a team of 20 service personnel, that provides critical administrative, HR, financial management, data and information management and operational support to an Army unit, which usually consists of between 350 – 730 soldiers. This enabling role focuses on supporting the operational effectiveness of the Army unit both in the UK and for any personnel of the unit deployed overseas, through the correct administration of HR policies, including pay, allowances, expenses and adherence to organisational HR and financial compliance policies. The role supports the security of sensitive personal data through information governance and data management. An additional element of the role includes supporting the welfare, career progression, technical training and holistic development of their team.
