The Ministry of Defence employs over 50,000 Civil Servants. Within that, the Army Top Level Budget (TLB) employs around 7,000 MOD Civil Servants located at over 300 locations. Ours is a diverse workforce, with roles ranging from trainers, human resources, teachers, and psychologists to storekeepers, financiers, project and programme managers, and policy secretariat staff. There are many different functions and professions delivering key outputs for the Army.
1st (United Kingdom) Division is the UK’s light and airborne division which is rapidly deployable and optimised for complex terrain. Our purpose is to fight and win battles on land. The Division comprises of a Headquarters located in York and nine Brigade headquarters based around the country with the posts being advertised in three of these, 4 Light Brigade Combat Team (Catterick), 7 Light Mechanised Brigade Combat Team (Cottesmore) and 11 Security Force Assistance Brigade (Aldershot).
Working within a Brigade Headquarters, our civilian staff deliver crucial outputs and play a meaningful part of the team. When you see our service personnel being reported on in the media whilst out on operations around the world, providing support and help to others overseas and at home, or out training so they can be the best at what they do, you will have immense pride knowing you played some part in making it happen.
We are seeking highly motivated Information Managers in Aldershot, Cottesmore, Catterick and Grantham to support 1st (UK) Division and provide specialist Information Management (IM) knowledge to the Brigade Commander and the wider Brigade. This position is advertised at 37 hours a week. Offers will be made to the successful candidate in each location. We will keep a reserve list of all candidates who pass the interview, and you may be contacted within 12 months regarding other similar vacancies at your preferred location.
The Information Manager post enables information superiority across the Brigade, including its units, and maintains integrated management processes and services to provide exploitable information on time, in the right place and format, to maximise freedom of action. As an Information Manager you will:
- Support Unit dependencies on all Information Management (IM) issues, ensuring proper Governance and maximum exploitation of all information resources.
- Provide advice on IM policy and initiatives and support the resultant change programmes within the division.
- Support implementation of policy on Information Governance to ensure proper management of, and efficient access to, all information stored on any medium, throughout its life cycle.
- Be the Subject Matter Expert (SME) on SharePoint etc providing advice and guidance to other branches to enable them to work more efficiently.
- Support the management of IM implications of Freedom of Information policy, particularly Records Management.
- Responsible for Records Management in the Brigade and support implementation of Records Management within the Brigade.
- Manage all IM projects and initiatives (particularly the introduction of Electronic Working Practices).
- Line management of AO Information Support Assistants (ISA’s).
- Create the organisations file plan.
- Prioritise own tasks to efficiently support team outputs.
- Support problem solving via the application of policy direction or detailed instructions.
- Efficiently provide relevant information to support senior staff decision making.
- Use appropriate methods of communication such as email, Skype/Teams or face-to-face, taking into consideration the needs of the audience.
- Represent HQ at higher formation or external conferences/meetings when required.
The ideal candidate will be well organised and will possess strong written and verbal communication skills. They will be able to quickly build good working relationships with a variety of partners, both internal and external to the organisation and be able to provide support to a wide range of people of different backgrounds. They will have good Information Technology skills, including basic Microsoft Office 365, and have excellent time management skills. They will use initiative to prioritise work with minimal direction whilst maintaining an excellent attention to detail.

Alongside your salary of £29,580, Ministry of Defence contributes £8,569 towards you being a member of the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme. The post does not offer relocation expenses. External recruits who join the MOD who are new to the Civil Service will be subject to a six-month probation period.
