Our Estates and Facilities function play a critical role in ensuring that all campuses operate safely, efficiently, and in line with statutory requirements, including health & safety and fire safety compliance.

The Role

The Health & Safety Executive will be responsible for maintaining a safe, secure, and compliant environment across all UK Management College premises. The postholder will oversee health and safety compliance, fire safety procedures, workplace safety standards, emergency planning, and risk management activities in accordance with UK legislation. This role is key to ensuring that all campuses operate safely for students, staff, contractors, and visitors, supporting a culture of safety and continuous improvement.

Key Responsibilities

  • Health & Safety Responsibilities
    • Ensure compliance with the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974 and relevant UK legislation
    • Assist in developing, implementing, and reviewing Health & Safety policies
    • Conduct regular health & safety inspections across all campuses
    • Carry out workplace risk assessments and monitor control measures
    • Promote and maintain safe working practices throughout the organisation
    • Monitor accident reporting procedures and maintain incident records
    • Investigate accidents, incidents, hazards, and near misses
    • Recommend corrective and preventive actions following incidents
    • Ensure appropriate health & safety signage is displayed
    • Maintain accurate compliance records and documentation
    • Support internal and external health & safety audits
  • Fire Safety Responsibilities
    • Support implementation of fire safety procedures across campuses
    • Ensure fire risk assessments are completed and regularly reviewed
    • Coordinate fire drills and evacuation exercises
    • Monitor fire alarm systems, emergency lighting, extinguishers, and fire exits
    • Ensure evacuation routes remain clear and compliant
    • Liaise with contractors for maintenance of fire safety equipment
    • Maintain fire safety logs and compliance documentation
    • Assist in developing emergency and evacuation plans
  • Premises Safety Responsibilities
    • Conduct routine inspections of buildings and facilities
    • Identify hazards within teaching, office, and communal areas
    • Monitor contractor and visitor compliance with safety procedures
    • Ensure safe maintenance and operational practices are followed
    • Support COSHH monitoring where applicable
    • Report safety-related maintenance issues to management
  • First Aid & Emergency Arrangements
    • Ensure appropriate first aid provision across campuses
    • Monitor availability of first aid kits and emergency supplies
    • Maintain records of trained first aiders and fire marshals
    • Support emergency response procedures
    • Assist in planning and delivering emergency preparedness activities
  • Compliance Monitoring
    • Support internal compliance audits and inspections
    • Maintain compliance trackers and action plans
    • Monitor updates to UK Health & Safety legislation
    • Assist with preparation for external inspections and audits
    • Produce health & safety reports for senior management

About You

Essential

  • NEBOSH General Certificate (minimum) or IOSH Managing Safely (or equivalent)
  • Safeguarding Level 3 Training
  • Fire Safety qualification or relevant hands-on experience
  • Experience working in a Health & Safety role
  • Experience conducting inspections and risk assessments
  • Strong knowledge of UK Health & Safety legislation
  • Experience supporting fire safety and emergency procedures
  • Experience maintaining compliance records and documentation
  • Strong communication and organisational skills
  • Ability to work independently across multiple locations
  • Excellent attention to detail and problem-solving skills
  • Professional and confidential approach to work

Desirable

  • Experience within Higher or Further Education
  • First Aid qualification
  • Membership of IOSH or IIRSM
  • Experience supporting audits and compliance inspections
  • Experience working in multi-site environments

Working Requirements

  • Ability to travel between campuses as required
  • Flexibility to respond to emergency situations and operational needs
  • Willingness to support occasional evenings or weekends (e.g. fire drills, emergency exercises)
