About the Team: Networks and Infrastructure (N&I) within the Home Office are responsible for delivering and maintaining the core infrastructure for all the Home Office. This post sits within the existing Core Infrastructure team. The team handles a diverse range of systems, concepts, and technologies. This includes Windows and Linux servers, core Windows technologies such as Active Directory, DNS, DHCP and Certificate Authority. They also manage server and service monitoring, Infrastructure as Code, immutable infrastructure, automation and serverless compute as well as public cloud provided services across several major public cloud vendors. The team collaborates extensively with other traditional infrastructure teams for connectivity and services as well as application teams to move legacy workloads to the cloud.
You will be expected to provide out of hours support, either via an onâcall rota or ad hoc upon request for maintenance or incident support.
Role Overview: A Senior Infrastructure Engineer builds, administers, transitions, supports and maintains infrastructure services throughout the service lifecycle, according to the departmental policy and Home Office strategy. You will work in a team of Infrastructure Engineers ensuring services are integrated, delivered and operated as the need arises. You will work with and support third parties in providing infrastructure services and with technical architects to translate architectural designs into operations. You will provide input into overall management activities such as workforce planning, budgeting, technology roadmaps, projects and tasks.
Tools & Technologies:
- Privileged Access Management solution such as CyberArk, Beyond Trust or Delinea
- Identity and Security, Active Directory and EntraID, Semperis DSP, SSO, ADFS, AADC
- Solid Windows Server Management & Infrastructure Knowledge such as DHCP, DNS, RDS, IIS, PKI, SCCM
- SQL or .NET framework
- Solid knowledge of Cloud Technologies (AWS or Azure Cloud)
- Solid Understanding of Infrastructure Monitoring and Security Tools, such as Grafana, Dynatrace, SCOM, Splunk etc.
Main Responsibilities:
- Reviewing systems configuration versus the design of others to ensure selection of appropriate technology, supporting the transition to live, including testing and integration activities.
- Administering and supporting multiple platforms including Cloud hosting services, ADFS, AADC and AD (both Microsoft Entra ID and onâpremise AD), ensuring the integrity and security of our platforms, products and services.
- Designing, integrating, implementing and maintaining core infrastructure solutions based on user/business needs using Microsoft tooling and platforms - aligning to departmental policies and strategies.
- Maintaining and updating technical documentation.
- Initiating and monitoring actions to investigate patterns and trends to resolve problems, including consulting specialists where required.
- You will lead the appropriate remedy and assist with implementation of fixes as well as preventative measures.
- Act as a subject matter expert within a team of 3rd line engineers, ensuring we provide the highest level of service to our customers and stakeholders with confidence.
- Coaching and mentoring more junior infrastructure engineers, participating in their appraisal and related performance management processes.
- Input into helping shape engineering best practices and standards.
- Investigate faults in systems, processes and services, and advise on the implementation of appropriate solutions and preventative measures.
Essential Skills:
- Strong experience in administration and/or development using Microsoft applications or services (either onâprem or cloud).
- Strong expertise in Infrastructure as Code (IaC) provisioning, restoration, and automation, with handsâon experience in scripting and development tools such as Terraform, .NET, PowerShell, Python, AutoIT, version control software.
- Dissecting a problem into its component parts to identify and diagnose root causes, allowing problem resolution.
- Managing and delivering complex technologies within time, cost and quality targets as well as providing direction and coaching to more junior members.
- Designing and integrating solutions with a focus on seamless interoperability with other services and technologies, ensuring both technical efficiency and optimal user experience.
- An aptitude for continual self and productâdevelopment with a strong sense of ownership and drive to follow tasks through to completion.
