Location – London, with travel expected to other HO sites and overseas

Salary – £130,000

A Civil Service Pension with an employer contribution of 28.97%

Homeland Security Group (HSG) sits at the heart of the Home Office and works to reduce homeland security risks to the UK’s people, prosperity and freedoms. Established in 2021, HSG leads on reducing risks from terrorism, state threats, economic crime and cyber-crime. We provide systems leadership across government and deliver strategic initiatives, working closely with operational partners, the Intelligence Agencies, and other external organisations to protect the UK.

As the Director General (DG) (HSG) you will set the strategic direction across the Group to lead and deliver homeland security strategy and to strengthen capabilities in these areas. As Director General, you will be a senior adviser to the Home Secretary and other Ministers on strategic national security. In fulfilling this role, you will need to work closely with colleagues across government and in the police services, and security and intelligence agencies, drawing on their expertise and skills.

The Director General will report to the Permanent Secretary of the Home Office and will also play an integral role in the strategic leadership of the Department as a member of the Home Office Executive Committee.

You will be responsible for approximately 1200 staff and a budget of c. £1.5 billion. Current line management responsibilities include 6 Directors and the DG’s private office. You will also be responsible for leading the Counter Terrorism system in a cross-government capacity.

The successful candidate will need to demonstrate their knowledge, experience, capability and behavioural approach to a high standard against the following key criteria:

  • Excellent people skills with the leadership/management capability to ensure modern and flexible working practices and to lead a diverse workforce into a cohesive and committed team.
  • The vision, credibility and ability to lead a broad and diverse system and to develop strategies and capabilities and the programme management and delivery skills to ensure that strategy is converted into effective implementation based on evidence.
  • The flexibility and personal resilience to adapt to rapidly changing circumstances in an environment of regular scrutiny by the media, public and others.
  • The confidence, authority and interpersonal skills to secure and retain the confidence of the Home Secretary, other Ministers, and senior officials and to maintain effective working relationships with heads of the security and intelligence agencies, counter-terrorism policing, as well as non-government organisations, industry and counterparts across government – both domestically and internationally.
  • Demonstrable ability to work successfully with the security and intelligence agencies, and able to navigate successfully the Whitehall government machinery.
  • Proven track record in managing substantial budgets.
  • Hold or be prepared to obtain Developed Vetted (DV) clearance.
