Location Birmingham, West Midlands (England), B9 5SS Job Summary The Public Health Laboratory in Birmingham is a UKHSA microbiology laboratory working in partnership with University Hospitals Birmingham Trust (UHB). It provides comprehensive microbiology services to several hospitals and general practitioners, and is one of the largest microbiology labs in the West Midlands NHS Region. It is fully accredited with UKAS and HCPC. The Regional Head of Laboratory Operations UKHSA is responsible for the operational management of the Birmingham Public Health Laboratory, working closely with the Laboratory Clinical Lead and management team. The role includes overseeing the delivery of mycobacterial reference services, providing microbiology support during outbreaks, and leading UKHSA activities across the Region. Key Responsibilities Overall operational management of the UKHSA Birmingham Laboratory in line with policies and accreditation schemes. Providing vision, leadership, and strategic development for the laboratory services. Managing the laboratory budget and ensuring financial compliance. Supporting clinical governance, staff training, research, and professional development. Participating in outbreak responses, surveillance, and reporting activities. Collaborating with regional and national agencies, and supporting research activities. Ensuring compliance with data protection, health and safety, and security requirements. Liaising with stakeholders, including NHS, local authorities, and other agencies. Participating in professional and managerial activities, including appraisals and training. Person Specification Essential criteria include a MSc in Biomedical Science, Microbiology, or Biological Science, HCPC registration, extensive microbiology experience, managerial expertise, and knowledge of laboratory safety and public health microbiology. Selection Process The process involves an application form, a 1500-word Statement of Suitability, and a competency-based interview.
