Due to continued growth, we are seeking an experienced and motivated Head of Accounts to lead our finance team and support the business's strategic objectives.

The Role

Reporting directly to the Managing Director, the Head of Accounts will be responsible for overseeing all aspects of the company's financial operations, ensuring accurate reporting, strong financial controls, and effective management of the accounts team. This is an excellent opportunity for a hands-on finance professional with strong Sage Accounting and Microsoft Excel skills who thrives in a fast-paced engineering environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Lead, manage, and develop the accounts team.
  • Prepare monthly management accounts and financial reports.
  • Oversee purchase ledger, sales ledger, payroll, VAT returns, and bank reconciliations.
  • Manage company cash flow, budgets, and financial forecasting.
  • Maintain and optimise Sage Accounting systems.
  • Produce detailed financial analysis and reporting using Microsoft Excel.
  • Monitor project costing and profitability across engineering contracts.
  • Ensure compliance with HMRC regulations and accounting standards.
  • Liaise with external accountants, auditors, and financial institutions.
  • Support senior management with strategic financial planning and decision-making.
  • Identify opportunities for process improvements and cost savings.

Candidate Requirements

Essential

  • Proven experience in a senior accounting or finance management role.
  • Previous experience managing an accounts team.
  • Strong working knowledge of Sage Accounting software.
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel skills, including Pivot Tables, VLOOKUP/XLOOKUP, and financial reporting.
  • Experience preparing management accounts and financial forecasts.
  • Excellent organisational and communication skills.
  • Strong attention to detail and analytical abilities.

Desirable

  • AAT, ACCA, CIMA, ACA, or equivalent accounting qualification.
  • Experience within the engineering, manufacturing, or contracting sector.
  • Knowledge of project costing and contract accounting.
