Professor Erin Schuman will join the UCL Queen Square Institute of Neurology as Institute Director in January 2027; the Schuman laboratory will join the Department of Neurodegenerative Disease and will be located in the Francis Crick Institute. Erin Schuman lab’s long-standing research interest is the study of the molecular and cell biological processes that control protein synthesis and degradation in neurons and their synapses. The complex morphology of neurons, with most synapses located hundreds of microns from the cell body, presents a logistical challenge for the establishment, maintenance and modification of local synaptic proteomes. Neurons have solved this problem by localising important cell biological machines, including ribosomes and proteasomes, within dendrites and axons.

About the role

The Schuman Lab is now recruiting an enthusiastic Research Laboratory Manager with a passion for neuronal cell biology and an understanding of the necessary groundwork required in managing the day-to-day operations and maintenance of a fast-paced, collaborative laboratory, able to keep it orderly and well organised. You will oversee all operations for the newly established research group in conjunction with the Principal Investigator (PI) and lab members. The position integrates research, laboratory management and administrative responsibilities. You will also have the opportunity to conduct independent research projects to the extent that you desire in consultation with the PI, as well as provide technical and experimental support for several projects ongoing in the Schuman lab. The post is available from January 2027 and funded for two years in the first instance. Interviews are expected to take place on 07 or 11 September 2026.

About you

You’ll have a PhD in Molecular-Cellular Neuroscience, Biochemistry, Molecular Biology or a related discipline, and prior experience of working in experimental laboratory research, working with neurons, biochemistry, molecular biology, and histology assays, and of managing transgenic mouse lines. You’ll have strong interpersonal, communication, and problem-solving skills, the ability to act on your own initiative, and be able to work effectively both independently and as part of a team. This role meets the eligibility requirements for a skilled worker certificate of sponsorship or a global talent visa under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore, UCL welcomes applications from international applicants who require a visa.
