The Department of Medical Physics and Biomedical Engineering at UCL is one of the UK’s largest and most diverse departments. We seek Postgraduate Teaching Assistants to support teaching and learning activities for the upcoming academic session:
- Facilitating laboratory practical sessions
- Supporting small‑group project work and tutorials
- Assisting with marking and providing feedback
- Helping to prepare teaching materials
Specific responsibilities will vary depending on the assigned module(s) and departmental needs.
We invite applications from highly motivated individuals who are current or prospective doctoral (PhD) students at UCL. Students must be enrolled on an MPhil programme to be eligible to apply.
Applicants must:
- Be registered UCL research students at the time of appointment.
- Have the right to work in the UK.
Some roles do not require specialist skills, and training can always be provided, however some of the skills (though not all) that we are looking for are listed below – having a range of them increases the chance of being appointed:
- Analogue Electronics to 1st year undergrad level and/or degree level electrical engineering
- Experience using CAD software (Solidworks, Fusion 360) and experience of 3D printer use
- Experience in technical drawing
- Experience of measuring bio‑impedance signals
- Matlab and/or Simulink experience
- Arduino type programming experience
- Proficiency in Python programming
- Design and DIY skills
- Physics background with knowledge of optics, waves, thermodynamics, solid state physics, nuclear medicine
- Mechanical Engineering background – in particular, knowledge of materials and dynamics, using an Instron machine
Before confirming your appointment, you must provide valid right‑to‑work documentation, such as a current passport and any applicable visa (sharecode).
PGTA roles are offered under an average‑hour contract, meaning your total agreed hours will be evenly distributed over the duration of the contract. This arrangement ensures that you receive consistent, prorated monthly payments throughout your employment period. All new PGTAs will start at the first spinal point of Grade 6. PGTAs with prior experience from the previous academic session will advance by one spinal point.
At UCL, employed PGTAs are entitled to sick leave and pay, as set out in the Conditions of Service for Research, Teaching and Professional Services Staff. PGTAs qualify for sick pay, which is automatically included in their normal monthly salary as they are on an Averaged Hours contract. Additionally, annual leave pay is also included automatically. HR Services will automatically calculate the payment due for any leave accrued for the hours worked monthly for Averaged Hours contracts.
