Civil Engineering Workshop Technician – Internal UCL Applicants only
ABOUT THE ROLE
The role sits within a multidisciplinary team of technicians working in the department’s civil engineering workshop. Providing practical technical support for the effective and efficient day‑to‑day operation of the department’s laboratories. Contributing to lab classes, year 3 projects and field trips across the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. Providing technical support to research activities and projects.
- Design and manufacture novel experimental devices and complex equipment that will contribute to the development of existing and new research and teaching initiatives in the department.
- Create and develop 3D models and drawings using CAD software (e.g. Fusion 360) to meet design specifications.
- Operate a comprehensive range of precision manual and CNC engineering workshop machinery and equipment.
- Prepare construction and engineering materials to produce specimens in various materials, such as metals, plastics, composites, concrete and cement.
- Responsible for the Geomatics surveying equipment store, keeping a log of equipment out on loan, checking equipment returns. Preparing equipment ready for use, coordinating annual service and repair of equipment.

ABOUT YOU
- Completed a certified apprenticeship in mechanical engineering with a BTEC or HNC level 3 – 4 qualification in an associated engineering subject or equivalent demonstrable experience gained in an engineering workshop.
- Experience in precision manufacturing gained either in a production, prototyping or instrument making setting.
- Proficient in using a comprehensive range of precision engineering machinery and equipment both manual and CNC including lathes, milling machines, drilling machines, surface grinders, band saws, sheet metal fabrication, MIG/TIG welding, brazing, soldering.
- Familiar using 3D printers and laser cutter and engraver.
- Competent using CAD/CAM software to create 3D models, drawings and toolpaths for manufacture, ideally using Fusion 360.
