Arts and Sciences Postgraduate Teaching Assistant

The UCL Arts and Sciences (UASc) department is the home for the Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc) which is the UK’s leading interdisciplinary degree, covering arts, social sciences and sciences degree. BASc combines the breadth of interdisciplinary study across the arts and sciences with the opportunity to specialise in one or two key subject areas. There is also postgraduate taught sister programme to UCL’s Bachelor of Arts and Sciences (BASc), the new MASc in Creative Health which combines the breadth of interdisciplinary study across the arts and sciences, with the opportunity to specialise in the role of non-clinical, community‑led, socially engaged approaches to public health.

The Department of Arts and Sciences wishes to make a number of appointments for Postgraduate Teaching Assistants for the 2026/27 academic year. These appointments are required to work on the BASc Arts and Sciences degrees based at the Bloomsbury campus, the BA Creative Arts and Humanities degree based at the UCL East campus in Stratford and the MASc in Creative Health degree which is also based at the UCL East campus. We are also offering some marking only opportunities across each of these programmes.

The purpose of this job is to support teaching and learning in our BASC‑coded modules, working with the academic modules leads through the delivery of small group teaching for students taking modules in the Arts and Sciences Department. Main duties of the post are:

• Tutorial class teaching
• Regular meetings with the course lecturer
• Provision of feedback to students
• Attendance reporting
• Coursework assessment and examination marking

PGTAs will be given training in support of their roles. PGTAs are expected to be able to commit to being present on the Bloomsbury or UCL East campus for the BASc modules for the full duration of the term(s) for which teaching is allocated and during the examination period as required. We will not be offering any online seminar classes in 2026/27. This role does not meet the eligibility requirements for a Skilled Worker Visa certificate of sponsorship under UK Visas and Immigration legislation. Therefore UCL will not be able to sponsor individuals who require right to work in the UK to carry out this role.

Applicants must be in at least the second year of their PhD studies at the start of any contract with us (28 September 2026 for term 1 or 4 January 2027 for term 2). The only exception to this is for applicants applying for the BASC0063 Performance Practice 1: Body, Space, Expression module who only need to be educated to Masters level. PhD students from outside UCL can also apply, but priority for appointments will go to current UCL PhD students. The MS Forms application form will allow you to apply for more than one module per term but we will only appoint for a maximum of one BASC‑coded module per teaching term. You should indicate all modules, a maximum of three per term, you’re interested in at the application stage. Please check the job description and person specification for additional knowledge or experience required for some modules. All contracts are inclusive of teaching hours, preparation hours, office hours and marking. Previous experience of undergraduate teaching is desirable. Please note that we can only consider applications from students still completing their PhD and registered as a student at the time a contract would begin (see dates above).
