We’re now looking for a Data & Technology Policy Lead to help shape how UK Biobank approaches data governance, emerging technologies, and responsible data use. This is a role at the intersection of policy, technology, and research — influencing how data is accessed, protected, and used to drive meaningful scientific discovery at the world’s most widely used medical database.
As a welcoming and inclusive organisation, we value collaboration, thoughtful judgement, and people who are motivated by working on challenges that have real‑world impact. This is a strategic role supporting the development and delivery of UK Biobank’s ambitious data and technology agenda. The role involves shaping areas such as data governance, platform security, and new technology partnerships. You’ll work closely with the Director of Data Policy, as well as colleagues across Data & Technology, Data Management, Legal, and Engagement Teams — ensuring the organisation makes informed decisions about how our data is used and managed at scale.
You’ll also contribute to major transformation initiatives, such as our next generation Trusted Research Environment (TRE), helping ensure policy is embedded into delivery, while engaging stakeholders and communicating complex topics clearly.
Is this you?
To be successful, you will have:
- Significant experience in strategic planning, research intelligence, or policy development within the health sector, scientific research or Government environment.
- Knowledge and working experience of the UK’s health data ecosystem, with an understanding of the legal, regulatory and governance context.
- Ability to engage effectively with technical and scientific specialists in areas such as data architecture, medical research, as well as legal and compliance.
- Proven ability to review, understand and interpret complex technical and policy information and translate it into clear, actionable policy or strategic recommendations.
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to produce clear and concise reports and briefings for boards, committees etc.
- Strong organisational and problem‑solving skills, with the ability to manage multiple priorities in a dynamic environment.
Working hours are 35‑hours per week, Monday to Friday with some flexibility, 3 days onsite with hybrid working available. The role will be based in our London office. Occasional travel will be required to Oxford, London, Manchester and Imaging Centres.
We’re committed to creating a welcoming, respectful, and inclusive workplace where everyone can thrive and grow. We actively encourage applications from people with disabilities, long‑term health conditions, neurodivergent candidates, and those with diverse thinking styles—because different perspectives make us stronger.
