The salary for this role is £57,117 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 3 days a week; however, we actively support requests for flexible working. The role can be based at any of the following sites: Culham, Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Diagnostic & Fusion Engineering Team is part of the Sensors & Control Unit in the Plasma Science & Operations Division. The team offers engineering and installation support on a range of diagnostic systems and related technology, working closely with scientific and technical staff. The team works on projects from across UKAEA as well as contracts with national and international partners.

A Senior Diagnostic Project Engineer will manage a range of diagnostic projects varying in scale and complexity. You will take a lead role in creating innovative design solutions to meet challenging requirements relating to diagnostic and fusion-related systems, acting as both an experienced project manager and contributing to designs with a high level of technical competence. The post holder will take full responsibility for the definition, design, manufacture, assembly, commissioning, operation, disassembly and end of life processing for a variety of diagnostic and fusion-related subsystems, including ownership of project risk until close-out.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Define project requirements, constraints, and deliverables
  • Create and maintain project plans, risk registers, work packages and cost profiles
  • Delegate work packages and co-ordinate the activities of the project team to deliver projects on-time, in budget, and with appropriate quality levels, employing corrective actions to minimise any impact on schedule and budget
  • Manage and review the activities of the Design Office, and the Modelling & Design and Engineering Evaluation Teams
  • Chair design reviews and progress meetings to report project status, current activities, and to raise issues
  • Produce technical documentation (including reports, specifications, work procedures, risk assessments, tender documentation, and Safe System of Work paperwork) and ensure adherence to design standards and UKAEA’s Quality System
  • Manage component procurement, liaising with internal and external manufacturers and carrying out supplier visits to ensure compliance
  • Supervise and direct installation activities, ensuring design and safety compliance

Degree level qualifications in a relevant scientific or engineering field. Experience in creating specifications and handling technical documentation approval processes. Experience of modern assembly and manufacturing techniques. Strong communication skills to interface with both internal and external stakeholders and management, scientific, clerical and technical staff. Proven leadership experience in managing technical teams and projects. Experience in project planning including resource and cost profiling. A good level of PC skills, including experience with Microsoft Office.
