Fusion, the process that powers the sun and stars, is one of the most promising options for generating the cleaner, carbon-free energy that our world badly needs. Our goal is to bring fusion electricity to the grid by developing the power stations of tomorrow and the skilled workforce to deliver them.

The Materials Research Facility and teams provide advanced capabilities in nuclear and fusion materials. The MIAMI team studies materials under extreme fusion conditions using modelling, neutron experiments, and radiochemistry, while developing waste-reduction strategies. The Materials Science and Engineering team designs and tests advanced nuclear materials, including metals, composites, and coatings, using multiscale structural engineering and innovative post-irradiation and in-situ testing methods.

As MIAMI Senior Materials Scientist, you will play a pivotal role in undertaking research operations using the MIAMI-2 facility at the University of Huddersfield and assist in the relocation of the laboratory equipment to J41 at Culham Campus.

Core responsibilities:
  • Maintain and operate the MIAMI-2 facility and associated equipment.
  • Plan and deliver experimental programmes using the MIAMI-2 facility.
  • Support the relocation of the MIAMI-2 laboratory to a new location.
  • Conduct scientific research, including literature review and data analysis.
  • Interpret and critically evaluate experimental results and published research.
  • Collaborate with facility users, researchers, and key stakeholders.
  • Prepare and deliver technical presentations for internal and external audiences.
  • Contribute to research planning, strategy development, and continuous improvement.
  • Undertake administrative duties related to the MIAMI-2 facility and laboratory.
Qualifications:
  • Degree (or equivalent experience) in materials science, physics, chemistry, mathematics, or a closely related discipline.
  • Technical expertise in one or more core materials areas, including metallics, non-metallics, microstructural analysis/modelling, testing, fabrication, or irradiation campaigns.
  • Hands-on experience in laboratory-based materials research and experimental campaigns.
  • Experience designing, operating, and maintaining advanced research facilities, including ion beam systems and transmission electron microscopy.
  • Track record of internationally recognised materials research, supported by a strong peer-reviewed publication record.
