Job Description

The salary for this role is £42,858 (inclusive of a Specialist Allowance). Onsite working is expected for 5 days a week due to operational needs, however, we actively support requests for flexible working.

This role will be based in Culham, Oxfordshire.

This role requires employees to complete an online Baseline Personnel Security Standard (BPSS), including The Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) checks for criminal convictions and possibly a search of open source data.

The Role

As a Diagnostic Physicist, you will provide critical technical support to the diagnostic systems of MAST-U Thomson Scattering and Interferometer. Your responsibilities will encompass assisting Research Officers in the smooth, routine operation of these systems, ensuring their reliability through meticulous maintenance and calibration, and diligently validating the data they produce.

You\’ll also contribute to the design, construction, and commissioning of innovative laser-based diagnostic systems. This includes potential involvement in projects for ITER and collaborations with pioneering private fusion companies, placing you at the forefront of fusion technology development.

Qualifications

  • PhD or equivalent experience with expertise in experimental physics
  • Experience in developing and/or overseeing diagnostics systems in complex scientific environment
  • Experience in working with high power lasers is highly desirable
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Proficiency with data analysis software and IDL or Python languages
  • Professional approach to operation and safety
  • Ability to work effectively in a large team
  • Experience in working with high power lasers would be highly desirable
