The Role

UKAEA is looking for a talented Electronic Design Engineer to bring their expertise to a range of innovative projects and programmes at UKAEA. In this role, you will provide electronic engineering expertise across UKAEA projects and programmes. You will take a proactive approach to the design, development, construction, testing, commissioning, and maintenance of electronic cards, assemblies, sub-assemblies, and control and instrumentation systems. Be part of a team shaping the future of energy and apply your skills where they truly make an impact. We're looking for someone with strong organisational and time management abilities, excellent electronics design expertise, including mixed signal design, and confident interpersonal and communication skills, both written and verbal. Key Accountabilities:

  • Lead and deliver small to medium work packages and technical studies, working with engineers, technicians, and contractors to design, install, commission, and maintain electronic systems in line with UKAEA technical controls and procedures.
  • Capture requirements, develop designs, produce schematics and PCB layouts, and lead design reviews using appropriate EDA, modelling, and simulation tools such as Proteus, MATLAB, Simulink, PSIM, and LTSpice.
  • Provide responsive on-plant technical support and expert advice across UKAEA programmes, including MAST-U, overseeing the build, test, evaluation, repair, and low-voltage testing of electronic modules, cards, and sub-assemblies.

  • An honours degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering, or a related discipline and demonstrable post graduate experience in an electrical/electronic engineering role. Or an HND in an Electrical/Electronic discipline, or equivalent qualification level, with significant industrial experience.
  • Able to work effectively both independently and within a team, adapting to diverse tasks while applying technical expertise to solve problems, being flexible and able to work across teams and the business where necessary.
  • Embedded programming experience.
  • Experienced in using EDA software for schematic and PCB design, as well as performing work following safety protocols such as risk assessments, method statements, and formal permit systems, particularly for low and high voltage testing.
