Are you ready to lead capital projects that transform spaces, shape visitor experiences, and deliver lasting change in a world‑class cultural environment?

The Science Museum’s Masterplan is an ambitious programme of capital projects which is transforming our visitors’ experiences through beautiful and well‑crafted design. From new permanent galleries to enhanced facilities and experiences, you will be part of the step change in Science Museum Group’s aspiration to engage with the best design practices to deliver exceptional visitor experiences.

Since 2011, the Masterplan has transformed over 50% of the Museum’s galleries and public spaces. Projects such as Energy Revolution: The Adani Green Energy Gallery, Technicians: The David Sainsbury Gallery, and Medicine: the Welcome galleries provide visitors with world‑class galleries and public spaces, improved facilities and thoughtful interpretation interventions. And we still have more to come!

The scale of this ambition is matched across each of the Group’s sites, with transformational programmes underway in The National Railway Museum, the National Collections Centre, the Science and Industry Museum and the National Science and Media Museum.

As Masterplan Project Director, you will work within the groupwide Masterplan team to deliver new galleries and public spaces to transform the visitor experience at the Science Museum. The Masterplan Project Director will be responsible for delivering projects through all RIBA stages, from brief definition through construction to handover, leading teams of internal colleagues and external design, construction and fitout professionals. You will maintain a complete overview and accountability for all aspects of projects assigned to you and you will work collaboratively to ensure full integration and alignment with the Masterplan vision.

You may also have the opportunity to lead or support feasibility work across other SMG sites. We are currently recruiting for two Masterplan Project Director roles – one on a permanent basis and the other on an 18-month fixed-term contract. The roles can be worked up to 35 hours per week (with a minimum of 28 hours per week), Monday to Friday, and will be based at the Science Museum in London.

As part of your application, please let us know which contract type you would prefer (permanent or fixed-term), or whether you would be open to either option, as well as the number of hours you would ideally want to work within the 28–35 hour range. Please include this information in your response to the application question in the Vacancy Information Pack.
