We are looking for someone with a background in science and industry, either through museum practice or industry experience, and an interest in connecting science and industrial heritage to audiences, to join our Curatorial & Participation team.

The Curator of Science and Industry will work collaboratively internally, and through participatory practice, to better research, document, and support access to Birmingham’s scientific and industrial collections. They will also contribute to ongoing gallery developments, across Birmingham Museums Trust’s sites, with a particular focus on Thinktank, supporting the development and delivery of new displays that will engage existing and new visitors.

We are open to applications which highlight academic, industry, heritage sector, voluntary, or lived experience as a route to your approach to this role.

To succeed in this role, you will need to be able to demonstrate the following skills and experience:

  • Experience in working with science and industry collections, and/or relevant lived or other experience

  • An understanding of the Trust’s commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion

The collection illustrates Birmingham’s role as the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution and its claim to be the Second City of the British Empire. For 200 years Birmingham traded globally in raw materials and finished products, and it remains a centre of manufacturing and innovation today. As well as documenting the city and region’s development from a centre of craft production through industrial dominance, post-industrial decline and reinvention, it enables Birmingham Museums to challenge accepted histories of industrialisation, empire and innovation. The collection covers five collection areas: manufacturing, engineering, science and medicine, technology and transport. For a brief summary of BMT\’s Science & Industry collections, please read through the attached Policy.
