Job overview

The Oncology Unit is looking for a caring, compassionate and motivated person to join our close-knit team. We provide treatment and support to people with cancer across North Lancashire and South Cumbria. Working in oncology can be extremely rewarding, in the knowledge that you are helping others to navigate their cancer journey. The feedback we receive from patients is overwhelmingly positive, and we welcome all applicants who feel they have the right attributes to enhance the team.

The Oncology & Haematology department has an excellent reputation for providing compassionate, patient centred care. We are fortunate to have a diverse group of nurses, doctors and support staff who all work together to promote the trust and NHS core values, and above all else, the best interests of our patients.

Important Note: We operate 5 days per week in Lancaster and 2 days a week in Kendal. Applicants MUST be available to travel to either site as required.

Main duties of the job

The main duties of the role are assisting in the smooth running of oncology out-patient clinics and supporting patient and staff in the chemotherapy treatment rooms.

New staff must be willing to learn new skills and ways of working to enhance their own development and benefit the department.

Working in cancer care requires the ability to communicate and empathise with people living with life threatening, and life limiting disease. This is an area where the department excels, and we would look to promote and develop this in any new members of the team.

Please see the attached job description and person spec for full details. The following outlines the main duties:

  • Assisting in the smooth running of out-patient clinics
  • Communication and emotional support of the patient
  • Supporting nursing staff in the cancer treatment rooms
  • Maintaining a safe, clean and healthy working environment
  • Accurate documentation and communication
  • Utilising trust and unit specific IT systems
  • Clinical skills including phlebotomy and 12 lead ECG
  • Assisting nurse led PICC insertions
  • Clerical and organisational skills
  • Serving patient drinks and lunches

Working for our organisation

We operate from three main hospitals – Furness General Hospital (FGH) in Barrow, the Royal Lancaster Infirmary (RLI), and Westmorland General Hospital (WGH) in Kendal, as well as a number of community healthcare premises including Millom Hospital and GP Practice, Queen Victoria Hospital in Morecambe, and Ulverston Community Health Centre.

FGH and the RLI have a range of General Hospital services, with full Emergency Departments, Critical/Coronary Care units and various Consultant-led services.

WGH provides a range of General Hospital services, together with an Urgent Treatment Centre, that can help with a range of non-life threatening conditions such as broken bones and minor illnesses.

All three main hospitals provide a range of planned care including outpatients, diagnostics, therapies, day case and inpatient surgery. In addition, a range of local outreach services and diagnostics are provided from community facilities across Morecambe Bay.

Our community services for adults are provided in people’s homes, community centres, clinics, GP Practices, community hospitals and our main hospitals. Our aim is to work with people to help them remain independent, improve their health and manage their conditions through high quality care, advice and support.
