We are seeking a Consultant to join the current ENT team in the Trust. You will work Cross Bay with Furness General Hospital as the main site. You will be contracted for 10 sessions per week with the option to increase along with service needs. You will need to have a broad experience in general ENT. Any subspecialty interest in Otology is required and will be actively supported although on calls will need general ENT experience.

University Hospitals of Morecambe Bay NHS Foundation Trust covers a large geographic area which encompasses the Furness peninsula, the city of Lancaster and the Lake District. Morecambe Bay is nestled between the Lake District national park and the Yorkshire Dales as well as being in easy reach of the cities of Manchester and Liverpool. The area offers affordable accommodation with access to excellent grammar schools ranked as top in the country.

Main duties of the job include providing a comprehensive range of acute and support hospital services to a population of 350,000 based around Morecambe Bay. The ENT department has 5 consultants, 3 Associate specialists, 7 specialty ENT doctors and 2 junior doctors (CT1/2 at RLI, FY2 at FGH). We have two H&N Clinical Nurse Specialists, one Advanced Nurse Practitioner in post. There are specialised clinics such as a One stop Head & Neck clinic, Combined Rhinology clinic, Paediatrics clinics, Voice and Vertigo clinic. There are regular audit meetings, radiology meetings and video link meetings for the regional Head & Neck Multi-Disciplinary Team. The weekend on call rota would be 1:5 and weekday 1:4.

We have facilities for Sialendoscopy, Balloon Sinuplasty, and Endoscopic ear surgery, Trans Nasal Oesophagoscopy, BAHA's and DCR's, navigation for endoscopic sinus surgery and nerve monitoring for parotid/ear/thyroid surgery. We aim to provide patient care close to home. Our H&N network is with Royal Preston Hospital but we also have excellent ties with Manchester Royal Infirmary for Skull Base pathology and Rhinology related conditions. For paediatric services we have ties with Alder Hey and Manchester Children's. An elaborate audiology service is available for adults and paediatrics. There is an opportunity for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching as well and we have strong connections with the Lancaster Medical School. We are a paperless department with e-prescribing and e-requesting. We are keen to develop our services further safely and to the highest standard possible keeping in view with our specific geographic demands. We have a high day case rate and encourage any innovation to improve patient safety and experience along with improved efficiency.

Application for this substantive post will only be accepted if you hold full GMC registration with a license to practice and entry on the Specialist Register or anticipating being in receipt of CCT/Professional Portfolio (formally CESR) within six months of interview.

Qualifications required include:

  • Full GMC registration with a licence to practise at time of appointment
  • Entry on the GMC specialist register or be within six months of obtaining your CCT at the time of interview
  • FRCS or an equivalent appropriate higher surgical qualification
  • Evidence of audit and research experience
  • Higher professional qualification in ENT surgery, Teaching or Research and education

Experience required includes:

  • Significant experience in management of ENT
  • Experience of working in a multi disciplinary team
  • Evidence of involvement and experience in audit
  • Developed area of specialist interest
  • Have previous employment in the NHS
  • Broad based ENT exposure for adults, paeds and emergencies

Education and Training expectations include:

  • Critically assesses own learning needs and ensures a personal development plan reflects both clinical practice and the relevant generic capabilities to lead and develop the service.
  • Wide Range of Training in surgery demonstrated with SAC log book
  • Commitment to both undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and training
  • Accredited teaching experience
  • Suitable and mandatory courses as per ENT SAC curriculum
  • Evidence of previous teaching

Patient Safety & Quality Improvement responsibilities include:

  • Takes prompt action where there is an issue with the safety or quality of patient care, raises and escalates concerns through clinical governance systems where necessary.
  • Collaborates with MDT and interprofessional teams to manage risks and issues across organisations and settings
  • Evaluates and audits own and others clinical practice and acts on findings.
  • Completed QIP (Quality Improvement Project)
