The Neurology Specialist Doctor will work as part of the multidisciplinary Neurology team, providing high-quality assessment, diagnosis and management of patients with a broad range of neurological conditions. The postholder will contribute to inpatient and outpatient services, working closely with Neurology Consultants, Specialist Doctors, trainees, nurses and allied health professionals. The role provides an opportunity to develop specialist interests while contributing to the delivery and improvement of the wider neurology service.
Main duties of the job:
- Out-patient clinics at the UHL & community hospitals
- Ward round/inpatient care/ward referrals
- Multidisciplinary team working
- Supervise and train junior medical staff
- Teaching, research and administration
- On-call commitment for Neurology on a 1:10 rota with prospective cover including out-of-hours during the week days

Job responsibilities:
The overriding purpose is to support the provision of highest quality patient care through personal actions and continuous improvement. Responsibility for the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of illness, and the proper functioning of the department. Cover for colleagues' annual leave and other authorised absences. To participate in service development and business planning in collaboration with the other Consultants in the department, the CMG and local GPs and commissioners within the local CCGs. Participating in medical audit, the Trusts Clinical Governance processes and in CPD. CPD is provided in job plans and attendance at audit and other governance meetings is mandatory. In line with GMC Good Medical Practice it is the responsibility of the post-holder to ensure that all duties are carried out to the highest possible standard, and in accordance with current quality initiatives within the area of work. The post-holder is expected to respond in a timely fashion to legitimate requests from Trust officers; this might include investigations of incidents or complaints. The post-holder is expected to participate in professional continuing medical education; study leave is provided for this purpose. The post-holder will be expected to undertake the Trust Corporate and Directorate specific Induction and competency Programmes appropriate to role. The post-holder will be required to maintain their continuing professional development (CPD) to be able to successfully revalidate. As per the Trust requirement, the successful candidate will be required to have annual appraisal and attend / keep fully up to date with statutory and mandatory training as stipulated.
Person Specification:
Audit: Experience in, and commitment to medical audit. Undergone training in teaching and willingness to organise relevant audit activities. Completion of formal courses in audit. Published Audit.
Research: Understanding and interest in research. Ability to appraise research critically. Ability to supervise juniors undertaking research projects. Publications in nationally and internationally recognised peer-reviewed journals on subjects relevant to the specialty. Evidence of recent research and development activity. Previous first author publications in relevant publications. Experience of setting up, running and supervising trials. Evidence of previous research experience including recruitment to trials.
Qualifications: Full GMC Registration. Minimum of 12 years' experience since obtaining medical degree and two years in the relevant specialty. Membership of relevant Specialist Societies or Associations. Fully Accredited for Higher Specialist Training in GIM or AIM (+/- Another Medical Speciality).
Experience/Clinical Skills: Previous training in Neurology. Clinical Knowledge and Expertise: Appropriate knowledge base and ability to apply sound clinical judgment to problems; demonstrates clear, logical thinking/analytical approach; understands evidence-based practice. Willingness to develop skills and experience in areas of interest. Previous first author publications in relevant publications. Experience of setting up, running and supervising trials. Evidence of previous research experience including recruitment to trials.
Motivation: Personal integrity and reliability. Willingness to learn new skills. Ability to motivate and develop both medical staff and non-medical staff. Commitment to further develop the post and the service provided.
Management: Willingness to work as a member of the team and to share administrative responsibilities. Able to work in multidisciplinary teams and supervise juniors. Understanding of wider health agenda and modern NHS. Knowledge and experience of clinical governance issues. Capacity to manage/prioritise time and information effectively; capacity to organise own workload. Flexible. Awareness of Service Development issues.
