Are you an Optometrist or Dispensing Optician looking for a new challenge? Whether you have a community optometry or hospital optometry background, if you have a desire to support the training of the next generation of Optometrists this role may be for you. This is a very exciting time in Optometry with the great expansion of roles and opportunities being developed to deliver eye care across the UK.
An opportunity has now arisen to become part of the team delivering the BSc (Hons) Optometry degree at UHI (and the new MOptom optometry degree which commenced in September 2025) as an Optometry Clinical Tutor working on a sessional basis.
Responsibilities
- The post holder will provide clinical skills teaching support and assist with the delivery of the clinical skills modules within the optometry curriculum.
- They will support students in their clinical skills training and provide supervision to volunteer patient clinic sessions.
Qualifications
- GOC registered Optometrists or Dispensing Opticians.
- Passion to support the next generation of optometry trainees and a desire to share valued experience.
- Experience working with early career optometrists is desirable.
Commitment
This sessional post requires a minimum commitment of 3 sessions per semester (up to 4 hours per session). Time commitment varies up to 4 hours per session, 9am‑1pm or 1pm‑5pm, on a working pattern agreed with your line manager. Current delivery of this role is across the teaching week.
Other Information
The role will be an hourly rate, based on the UHI grade 6 pay scale. This post is part time with a commitment to deliver a minimum of 3 sessions per semester. It will be subject to a Disclosure Scotland Protection of Vulnerable Groups (PVG) Scheme and other background checks. The workplace pension scheme is the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS), a qualifying pension scheme that meets or exceeds the government’s standards.
