Job overview
Ward Sister/Charge Nurse to a busy Oncology Ward, consisting of 27 inpatient beds treating complex patients at differing stages of their cancer journey.
We treat patients in both curative and palliative stages of Cancer, deliver treatments such as Chemotherapy and Radiotherapy, and manage complex symptoms resulting from treatments or disease. It is a busy ward with at least 4 elective or emergency admissions and discharges daily.
You will be a shift/team leader, providing clinical leadership and management support, developing and evaluating best practice within the department. The post-holder will be required to deputise for the department manager and uphold the values of the Trust, being a role model.
Candidates will need to have substantial post registration experience and will need to demonstrate competency in the administration and management of chemotherapy.

Successful applicants will be required to provide an immunisation and vaccination report, from either their current UK occupational health provider or their UK GP.
Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will be integral to the ward in safe care delivery and implementing change and providing clinical support to staff members, participating in supervision, mentorship and completing appraisals.
They will be required to manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
The post holder will be required to promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards and maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
- Accountable for own actions in accordance with the Code of Professional Conduct. Will contribute to corporate objectives, acting within local, Trust and statutory guidelines and policies at all times.
- Effectively communicate information regarding clinical decisions, policy and care pathways to patients/carers and the multi-professional team.
- A skilled practitioner and clinical leader providing support to the management team, participating in service/policy development.
- Responsible for clinical assessment of a group of patients and management of a team, ensuring appropriate care is planned, implemented and evaluated/audited.
- Organisation of cross-departmental/organisational activities including HR, resource, and bleepholder responsibilities as appropriate.
- Demonstrate highly technical and/or practical skills to ensure optimum patient management including; complex patient monitoring; equipment management and frequent administration of invasive tests/procedures.
- Develop and educate staff, participating in supervision, mentorship and appraisal as required.
- Utilise and ensure others utilise IT systems to secure accurate and timely patient, workforce and resource data available.
- Manage expected and unexpected clinical events requiring varying levels of physical effort according to patient dependency/clinical need.
- Support patients, carers and others during difficult situations arising in the clinical area, e.g imparting bad news or following an unexpected event.
- Promote and monitor adherence to Health and Safety and Trust policy designed to protect healthcare staff and service users from known hazards.
- Maintain a clean, safe environment ensuring adherence to Trust standards of cleanliness, hygiene and infection control at all times.

Person specification
Qualification/Training
- Current Professional Registration Study at level 6 (Degree/Diploma) Evidence of continuous professional development Qualified in the administration of cytotoxic chemotherapy Qualified in the management of vascular access devices Qualified in cannulation and venepuncture Practice Assessor
Experience
- Substantial post registration experience Professional clinical experience in appropriate speciality. Ability to successfully manage change and people.
- Experience in HR and management related issues. Resource Management
Knowledge
- A knowledgeable clinician with the ability to apply evidence based practice A sound knowledge of professional policies and procedures Knowledge of clinical governance & a commitment to clinical supervision and staff development
- A good understanding of current issues relating to the NHS. Experience in Policy/Service development
