Applications are invited for Advanced Neonatal Fellows to join the NICU at St Michael's hospital, combining clinical work at ST6+ level with protected time to develop interest areas in research, teaching and/or improvement work. The post is for a period of 12 months from September 2025. This is an exciting opportunity for a suitably qualified candidate to enhance their experience in tertiary level neonatal intensive care whilst undertaking projects to enhance neonatal care and their own skills. The regional NICU at St Michael's Hospital provides regional tertiary neonatal intensive care for medical patients and supra-regional services for infants with surgical, neurosurgical and cardiac problems. It also acts as the base unit for the regional Neonatal Transport team. Experience in medical education, management, improvement or research is a core element of these fellowships and will be supported by a range of consultants with expertise in those areas.

Applicants should have a minimum of 12 months experience at ST6+/Senior SpR level or equivalent in neonatal medicine, be registered with the GMC and eligible to work in the UK.

Main duties of the job

This post would be suitable as a stand-alone fellowship, as out-of-programme experience or as a post-CCT fellowship. St Michael's NICU was rated in the top quartile (dark green) of neonatal placements for clinical experience, curriculum coverage, supportive environment and overall satisfaction on the 2018 GMC survey and the unit has a strong ethos of inclusion and development of our staff.

Person Specification

  • Essential Qualifications and Training: MB, ChB or equivalent; GMC registration or eligible for GMC registration; Full MRCPCH or equivalent; NLS or equivalent provider.
  • Desirable: BSc Higher degree (MD or PhD); Qualification in education; ARNI and/or APLS provider; NLS and/or ANRI instructor.
  • Essential Knowledge and Experience: General professional training of at least 5 years in approved UK or equivalent paediatric training posts. This must include at least 12 months in a tertiary neonatal intensive care post. 6 months of the remaining time may be in a relevant non-paediatric post; At SpR level - 6 months experience in NICU.
  • Desirable: Extended neonatal experience in a large tertiary unit capable of providing all levels of intensive care; Paediatric sub-specialty experience, including community child health, developing world paediatrics, and other subspecialties; Experience of obstetrics, intensive care, anaesthetics.
  • Essential Skills and Abilities: Commensurate with competencies outlined for ST4 level posts; Computer Literate; Experience of and willingness to participate in teaching of other professionals; Evidence of passion for research, education and improvement activities; Knowledge of the principles of QI and audit and evidence of participation in relevant projects.
  • Desirable: Early achievement of MRCPCH (or equivalent) after graduation; Evidence of training and/or skills in teaching and learning; Evidence of training and skills in research and/or improvement methodology.
  • Essential Additional & Aptitudes: Evidence of adherence to Trust values - respecting everyone, embracing change, recognising success, working together; Commitment to the care of children and a career in child health; Evidence of self-motivation; Commitment to learning.
  • Desirable: Ability to organise own learning and time; Evidence of initiative.
