Role Job Overview
We are looking to recruit a Clinical Coding Specialty Lead (ACC) to join our centralised Clinical Coding Team. This is a permanent, full-time (37.5 hours per week) hybrid clinical coding role. The clinical coding department determines the coding for around 12,000 episodes of care per month. The Trust provides a full range of hospital specialties, including regional and national specialist services. The trust uses Cerner EPR and all coding is undertaken from electronic source documentation.
Candidates should demonstrate extensive ICD-10 5th Edition and OPCS 4.10 knowledge, with a thorough understanding of National Clinical Coding standards. Experience in clinical coding across multiple specialties in an acute NHS Trust is required. A good knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy and physiology is also required. The NCCQ is preferred and considered essential, though applicants with relevant experience without the qualification will be considered. A 2-hour practical clinical coding assessment is required if advancing to the second interview stage.
Main duties
- Hold the NCCQ (National Clinical Coding Qualification) and demonstrate extensive expert knowledge of complex clinical coding across all specialties.
- Extensive experience in all aspects of clinical coding practice.
- Conduct clinical coding across all specialties in accordance with local and national policies, conventions and guidelines.
- Conduct clinical engagement with senior clinicians, service leads and other Trust staff.
- Become a subject matter expert for the designated clinical specialty and act as the first point of contact for coding queries in that specialty.
- Liaise with clinicians regarding the quality and interpretation of complex clinical documents via the electronic clinical record.
- Validate complex clinical and coded data with senior clinicians to ensure accurate reimbursement and robust data quality.
- Attend regular clinical governance and clinical validation meetings with appropriate clinicians.
