This role sits within the Digital Data & Technology (DDaT) team as an Integration Support Engineer, focusing on interoperability of healthcare systems and the Trust’s digital infrastructure.

Responsibilities

  • Development & Maintenance of Interfaces: design, develop, implement, and manage interfaces using the Trust Integration Engine (TIE) such as Rhapsody or Mirth to enable data exchange between clinical and operational systems.
  • Technical Troubleshooting: resolve data exchange issues (e.g., message formatting, connectivity, data mapping) with minimal disruption to clinical services.
  • Compliance with Industry Standards: ensure adherence to HL7, FHIR, DICOM, and related standards to secure data flow.
  • Data Transformation: manage complex data transformation processes ensuring data integrity.
  • Vendor & Supplier Management: liaise with third-party providers to implement integrations, patches, and updates per Trust standards; monitor SLAs and escalate as needed; assist in vendor evaluation and procurement.
  • Stakeholder Management & Communication: collaborate with clinical/operational teams, explain technical concepts to non-technical stakeholders, and provide regular status updates and training materials.
  • API Management & Development: design, deploy, and manage RESTful APIs; monitor performance and optimize functionality with vendors as needed.
  • Data Interoperability & Compliance: ensure exchanges comply with NHS, national, and international standards (HL7, FHIR, GDPR); safeguard data security and integrity.
  • Project Involvement & Implementation: participate in requirements gathering, system design, testing, and implementation; coordinate with project managers and clinical staff for timely delivery.
  • Testing & Quality Assurance: coordinate validation of new interfaces and integrations to meet functional and security requirements before go-live.
  • Documentation: maintain detailed records of design, workflows, testing results, and troubleshooting guides.
  • Continuous Improvement & Innovation: identify process improvements, stay updated on interoperability standards, and incorporate new developments into the Trust’s integration strategies.
  • Business Change & Transformation Support: support management and training to enable technology-driven change across the organization.
  • Governance & Compliance: ensure compliance with Trust governance, NHS digital guidelines, cybersecurity, and information governance regulations; support audits with clear logs and records.

Person specification

Experience

  • Essential criteria: At least 3 years of experience developing interfaces to EPR systems.
  • Desirable criteria: Oracle (Cerner) experience; experience working within a hospital environment.

Qualifications

  • Essential criteria: Experience developing and troubleshooting HL7 and FHIR interfaces; experience with interface engines such as Rhapsody.
  • Desirable criteria: NHS interfacing standards qualifications (HL7, FHIR).
  • Essential criteria: Degree-level education or equivalent experience.
