The UCL Cancer Institute, one of the world's leading centres for cancer research, is seeking a motivated and detail-oriented Histology Technician to join the Pathology Translational Technology Platform (TTP). This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to cutting‑edge translational research, supporting over 400 scientists working to develop more effective cancer therapies. The Pathology TTP plays a key role in delivering high‑quality histology services to researchers across UCL.
As a Histology Technician, you will join a small, collaborative team responsible for processing human and animal tissue samples and ensuring reliable, reproducible outputs for a wide range of research projects. Core responsibilities include:
- Tissue processing and embedding
- Microtomy and cryotomy
- Histological staining
- Slide scanning
- Construction of tissue microarrays (TMAs)
In addition to routine histology services, the TTP is expanding its capabilities in molecular histopathology. This includes the development of workflows in immunohistochemistry (IHC), nucleic acid extraction, and spatial transcriptomics. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to gain valuable hands‑on experience in these emerging areas, contributing to innovative research with real clinical impact.
Working closely with the Pathology TTP Manager, you will also support the day‑to‑day operation of the facility. This includes maintaining laboratory standards, ensuring accurate sample tracking, and supporting data management using spreadsheets and databases. You will interact with a diverse user base including students, postdoctoral researchers, clinicians, and basic scientists, making strong communication and organisational skills essential to the role.
This position is particularly suited to candidates looking to build a career in biomedical sciences or translational research. You will gain exposure to a wide range of laboratory techniques, as well as experience in core facility operations and laboratory management. Comprehensive training will be provided to support your development in both technical and operational aspects of the role.
Applicants must have prior research laboratory experience and demonstrable skills in microtomy and cryotomy of biological samples. A high level of accuracy and attention to detail is essential, along with the ability to manage data effectively. The ability to work independently as well as part of a team in a busy environment is key.
The role is full‑time, based on‑site at the UCL Cancer Institute in London, with working hours of 9:00‑17:00, Monday to Friday. The post is funded until September 2027 in the first instance, with an expected start date of 21 September 2026. The successful candidate will be required to undergo Hepatitis B vaccination.
