The UCL estates is the largest and most complex of any University in the UK, comprising more than 250 buildings. We want to ensure inclusivity is embedded throughout our estate - not just to the required standard, but far above and beyond.
Our Inclusive Environment team is responsible for improving the inclusive design of our buildings, thereby providing an environment which supports equal access and inclusion to UCL and its wider community. The team proactively tackles the challenges our estate brings, from small spaces and narrow doorways to lack of accessible toilets and stepped access between levels, entrances, exits and thresholds, lack of prayer space and quiet contemplation space, and much else besides.
In this job you will lead on designing and implementing the strategic changes needed to make our estate as inclusive as possible. You will provide in-house expertise on all aspects of accessibility and inclusive design in the estates management and facilities services for UCL. Leading and developing a team of two, you will work closely with partners and colleagues to create and maintain inclusive environments in and around UCL, delivering comprehensive inclusive design advice on projects and estates-related inclusive environment issues, including procurement, catering, security and cleaning.
You will apply your understanding of current and devolving policy, practice and guidance regarding inclusive design to a variety of buildings and streetscapes, ranging from new build through to listed / heritage buildings. Things you will need for this job include:
- A strong understanding of disability and inclusive design issues.
- A degree or professional qualification relevant to access and inclusive design and/or an equivalent level or depth of knowledge of inclusive design and accessibility.
- Membership of the National Register of Access Consultants (NRAC), or equivalent.
- A track record of success in providing comprehensive inclusive design and accessibility advice.
- Demonstrable experience of finding creative and innovative solutions to embed inclusive design within complex projects.
- Experience of working effectively with a range of internal and external stakeholders.
- Experience of working closely with project teams in delivery of a range of construction projects from minor refurbishment to new build and landscaping projects and leading strategic change.
- An understanding of current and devolving policy, practice and guidance regarding inclusive design.
