The Role
We have an exciting opportunity for an 8-month Clinical Advisor to support the implementation and expansion of Martha’s Rule across North Central and North East London as part of our Patient Safety Collaborative programme.
The Patient Safety Collaborative Team delivers quality improvement programmes aligned to NHS England’s National Patient Safety Strategy, working with NHS providers and commissioners to improve outcomes for patients, families, and carers.
Following the successful rollout of Martha’s Rule within adult and paediatric services, this role will support its expansion into other specialist areas (e.g. Emergency Departments, Maternity and Neonatal services) across the UCLPartners geography.
The Clinical Advisor will work closely with provider organisations to embed Martha’s Rule within complex clinical pathways. They will lead and support a range of improvement activities, including site visits, learning events, improvement clinics, stakeholder engagement, and bespoke coaching for local teams.
The post holder will provide both clinical and improvement expertise, supporting implementation, measurement, and spread of best practice while ensuring lessons learned are captured and shared. They will also be responsible for project management and delivery, ensuring projects achieve measurable outcomes and meet organisational requirements.
Applicants should have a clinical background, ideally in nursing or midwifery, alongside experience of quality improvement methodologies and project delivery.
They will also advise, coach, and facilitate discussions with local teams on improvement techniques and best practice to support the successful implementation, measurement and spread in line with the overall programme objectives, ensuring lessons learned are captured and fed into programme reviews.
Key Responsibilities
- Support the implementation, expansion and sustainability of Martha's Rule across Adult, Paediatric, Emergency, Maternity and Neonatal services within the UCLPartners geography.
- Work closely with the Head of Transformation and provider organisations to deliver national and regional Martha's Rule priorities.
- Build effective relationships with clinicians, operational leads, executives, commissioners, patients and wider stakeholders to support successful programme delivery.
- Facilitate engagement with multidisciplinary teams to promote local ownership, implementation and embedding of Martha's Rule within complex clinical pathways.
- Act as a key liaison between frontline teams, clinical leaders, governance structures and the wider Martha's Rule programme, ensuring effective communication and escalation where required.
- Provide clinical expertise, coaching, facilitation and constructive challenge to support service improvement and the adoption of best practice.
- Lead and support a range of improvement activities including site visits, learning events, improvement clinics, workshops, communities of practice and bespoke team support.
- Support organisations to design, test, measure and evaluate changes using change management and quality improvement techniques ensuring implementation is evidence-based and outcomes-focused.
- Capture, analyse and share learning, insights and good practice to support spread and sustainability across participating organisations.
- Act as a Workstream Lead (WSL) to undertake day-to-day project management activities including planning, delivery, risk management and reporting.
- Contribute to the development of improvement and transformation capability across UCLPartners through knowledge sharing, coaching and collaborative working.
Person Specifications
Clinical Background (Essential)
- Registered healthcare professional with current NMC registration (Nurse or Midwife).
- Significant clinical experience in an acute healthcare setting.
- Experience working within one or more of the following areas:
- Critical Care Outreach
- Intensive Care
- Emergency Care
- Maternity Services
- Neonatal Services
- Paediatric Services
- Experience of recognising, assessing and managing deteriorating patients and/or working within deterioration pathways.
- Ability to establish credibility with clinical teams and understand the operational realities of frontline healthcare delivery.
Coaching, Facilitation and Stakeholder Engagement (Essential)
- Experience of coaching individuals and teams to implement change and overcome operational challenges.
- Skilled in facilitating workshops, learning events and multidisciplinary discussions.
- Strong stakeholder engagement, influencing and relationship-building skills, with the ability to work effectively across professional and organisational boundaries.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to engage and motivate diverse audiences.
Knowledge (Essential)
- Understanding of Martha's Rule and its core components.
- Knowledge of patient deterioration pathways, escalation processes and family involvement in care.
- Awareness of the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing change across complex healthcare systems.
Transformation and Programme Delivery (Desirable)
- Experience delivering quality improvement, patient safety, implementation or transformation programmes within healthcare settings.
- Knowledge and application of quality improvement methodologies within complex healthcare systems.
- Experience supporting teams to implement and sustain change.
- Experience of project or programme management, including planning, delivery, monitoring and reporting.
- Experience contributing to national, regional or system-wide patient safety programmes.
- Experience of deterioration improvement initiatives.
- Understanding of approaches to reducing health inequalities and improving equity of access and outcomes.
- Experience working collaboratively with stakeholders such as NHS providers, academic institutions, and other partners.

Job Details
The Clinical Advisor will report to the Head of Transformation and will support the delivery and expansion of Martha's Rule across the UCLPartners geography.
This is a fixed-term position for 8 months, with the possibility of extension subject to funding. The role is full-time (37.5 hours per week), although applications for job-share arrangements will be considered.
The salary for this role is £50,000 to £60,000 per annum, depending on experience.
Applicants currently employed within the NHS will be appointed on a secondment basis. Shortlisted candidates should obtain agreement in principle from their employing organisation prior to interview.
