Lecturer in International Relations of the Americas in London

The UCL Institute of the Americas is seeking to fill a Lecturer position in the International Relations of the Americas, equivalent to a tenure-track Assistant Professor. The post has an anticipated start date of August/September. We welcome applicants with a PhD in International Relations, History or Political Science or related fields with a strong research background in International Relations of the Americas, focused on either:

• relations between China and the Americas (or Latin America);
• contemporary foreign policy with a focus on Inter-American affairs; OR
• migration processes or policies between Latin America and the United States.

The successful applicant will contribute to and expand our teaching and research in contemporary foreign policy analysis of the Americas, foreign policy, migration between Latin America and the United States, international relations, the history of contemporary foreign policy, and/or methodological skills training. They will develop optional modules at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and contribute to our core and skills development modules at both levels. They will also take on departmental responsibilities, participate in UCL-wide working groups and committees, and supervise PhD students working on international relations, international history, contemporary foreign policy analysis, or US foreign policy.

The successful candidate will have a PhD in International Relations, History or Political Science or related fields. Candidates must have received their doctorate before 1 July. They will have a strong research background and a demonstrated record, or clear trajectory, of internationally recognised publications in leading peer-reviewed journals or top academic presses in International Relations of the Americas with a substantive focus on one or more of the following areas:

• relations between China and the Americas (including either the United States or Latin America);
• contemporary foreign policy with an emphasis on Inter-American affairs; OR
• migration processes and migration policy between Latin America and the United States.

They will also have proven experience of teaching and assessment at university level in at least one of the following: US Foreign Policy, History of International Relations of the Americas, Americas-China Economic and Political Relations, International Relations, Migration in the Americas, and/or International History. They will be able to demonstrate a well-defined, innovative, and promising research agenda with clear objectives and a strong potential for advancing the field. They will also have demonstrated expertise in either quantitative, qualitative, or mixed (quantitative and qualitative) research methods and skills sufficient to conduct advanced research, supervise PhD and MA students, and teach introductory research methods.

The postholder will have a demonstrated ability, through existing publications, or strong potential to publish in top-tier academic journals and with leading academic publishers. They will be able to develop, plan and implement high quality and innovative curricula at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels, as well as be able to supervise academic work by undergraduate, postgraduate taught, and doctoral students who come from diverse disciplinary and cultural backgrounds. Alongside this, they will also have the ability to provide effective pastoral support for students at all levels.

The successful applicant will have the ability to contribute to the delivery of modules on Foreign Policy Analysis, History of International Relations of the Americas, International Relations, Migration in the Americas, and/or International History. They will be able to collaborate with colleagues from a range of different disciplines and have excellent interpersonal and communication skills, including the ability to communicate with non-academic audiences.
