UCL Eastman Dental Institute is an internationally recognised centre for excellence for postgraduate education and research relevant to oral health care. Together with UCLH NHS Foundation Trust’s National ENT & Eastman Dental Hospitals (UCLHT EDH), it provides care to patients with complex oral health needs.

We seek to recruit an experienced Professor/Honorary Consultant to provide academic leadership in the field of Periodontology. The post-holder is responsible to the Head of Periodontology and accountable to the Institute Director, Professor Dave Spratt. The post-holder will play a key role in delivering high-quality postgraduate education and clinical training in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry.

Responsibilities include:

  • Supervising complex clinical procedures for students in the MClinDent Periodontology programme.
  • Teaching and developing materials for the distance-learning MSc Periodontology.
  • Contributing to curriculum and assessment processes.
  • Supporting the coordination and administration of postgraduate programmes to ensure alignment with Institute and regulatory requirements.
  • Active participation in research within the Periodontology unit.
  • Collaboration with colleagues to maintain clinical governance and educational excellence.

The post-holder should have the experience and capability to inspire and lead advanced postgraduate education, research, and clinical care, including didactic teaching and clinical supervision of NHS and university trainees. They will be expected to contribute to the ongoing enhancement of the Periodontology programmes and to undertake and supervise research of internationally excellent quality, fostering an environment in which postgraduate students develop strong clinical and academic competence.

The post holder will be expected to establish and co-ordinate the delivery of Continued Professional Development allied to Periodontology. They will be expected to comply with both UCL and NHS regulations in line with clinical research and the delivery of clinical care and will be expected to adhere to the governance requirements such that quality standards are met. The post-holder will also be expected to work closely with the Clinical Lead of the allied NHS department to ensure that all patient-related protocols and guidelines relating to patient care are achieved and maintained. A DBS check is required to carry out this role.

The post-holder must be an experienced clinician and educator in Periodontology and Implant Dentistry, committed to delivering high-quality postgraduate education and clinical care. Candidates must hold a Master’s-level qualification in Periodontology, be fully registered with the UK General Dental Council, and be on—or eligible for entry to—the GDC Specialist List in Periodontology at the time of appointment. They should have substantial experience in postgraduate teaching, strong communication skills, and the ability to inspire and support learners. A sound understanding of clinical research methodology is essential, along with a demonstrable track record of original research publications in Periodontology. The post-holder will be required to have a Disclosure and Barring Service Assessment.
