General Counsel & Company Secretary – UCL Business Ltd (UCLB)
UCLB, a leading technology commercialisation company that supports the translation of UCL’s research into real-world impact, is seeking an experienced General Counsel & Company Secretary to lead its Legal Affairs team. With over 30 years of success, UCLB has licensed cutting-edge technologies and established spinouts that have attracted over £2.85bn in external investment.
This is a high-impact leadership role that will shape the strategic direction of UCLB’s legal and governance functions. The successful candidate will be purpose-driven, commercially pragmatic, and passionate about empowering their team to drive innovation and maximise UCLB’s impact. You will report directly to the Chief Executive Officer and work as a core part of the company’s senior leadership team.
Key Responsibilities:
- Lead and manage the Legal Affairs team, providing expert advice on commercial, IP, and corporate legal matters.
- Shape the strategic direction of UCLB’s legal function, aligning it with the organisation’s innovation and commercialisation goals.
- Ensure high-quality contracts that maximise returns while balancing legal risk.
- Manage complex stakeholder relationships across UCL, external investors, and spinout companies.
- Oversee governance and compliance as Company Secretary, ensuring board effectiveness and regulatory adherence.
- Advise on high-profile transactions, including licensing, spinouts, and investments.
- Foster an inclusive and collaborative culture, supporting and developing the Legal Affairs team.
About You:
- Significant experience in corporate, IP, and commercial law, ideally within research, technology transfer, or innovation-led sectors.
- A strategic and commercially pragmatic leader who balances risk with opportunity.
- Gravitas and credibility to engage with senior stakeholders and external partners.
- Proven ability to manage complex stakeholder relationships in a high-impact environment.
- Passionate about empowering teams and fostering an inclusive culture.
- Strong governance expertise, with experience as a Company Secretary.
