About Us

UCL established the Institute of Health Informatics (IHI) in August 2014 in the Faculty of Population Health Sciences. The aim of IHI is to conduct high quality data-intensive research to improve health at local, national, and international levels. It delivers one of the largest and most highly regarded teaching programmes in health informatics and health data science. It is home to one of four UKRI Centres for Doctoral Training in AI in Healthcare.

About The Role

The Institute of Health Informatics seeks to appoint a Research Fellow – Health Data Scientist to join our vibrant team. The successful candidate will work on a project with our industry partner, utilizing electronic health record data sources such as UK Biobank, Genes and Health, and Our Future Health, to develop and evaluate phenotyping algorithms, create data analysis plans, and contribute to scientific documentation.

The role involves participating in meetings with funders, providing expert advice on data science methodologies, and working full-time (36.5 hours/week) until 31 December 2026, with potential for further funding.

About You

You should hold at least a PhD in a related field (e.g., computer science, health informatics, bioinformatics) or equivalent experience. The ideal candidate will have strong programming skills in Python, experience manipulating large electronic health record datasets, knowledge of clinical terminologies like ICD-10 and SNOMED CT, and experience with relational databases and SQL.

Initial appointment at Grade 6B (£38,607 – £41,255) is available if PhD is not yet awarded, with backdating upon thesis completion.
