Sheffield Park is a National Trust garden planted for dramatic impact celebrating the size and scale of the place. The 120-acre garden and lakes sit within the listed landscape. There are a further 250 acres of woodland and parkland. The garden contains over 14,500 trees and shrubs set around the four large lakes which provide the stunning mirror effect. Spring and autumn’s peak of visitors can see more than 5,000 welcomed daily, enjoying the stunning seasonal colour. A visitor reception and shop adjoin the car park. The National Trust is Europe’s largest conservation charity, helping everyone across England, Wales and Northern Ireland to enjoy all sorts of very special places for ever, for everyone.

About this opportunity

We are looking for volunteers to help with the smooth running of the second-hand bookshop and assist with themed displays and promotions. As a volunteer, you’ll be evaluating, sorting, and pricing donated books with some support from staff for large donations. You’ll also provide a friendly and helpful service for all visitors and customers using the area.

What’s involved?

  • Taking in donations of books and evaluating their condition, pricing them and sorting them into genres.
  • Restocking books to maintain attractive displays, as well as helping to think of new and relevant themed displays.
  • Promoting the bookshop, thinking of new ways to support and help with relevant events on the property.
  • Keeping the bookshop clean and tidy.
  • Cash handling (cash sales and basic till operations).
  • Becoming familiar with and following the National Trust's values, GDPR compliance protocol, Health & Safety and any other training as required.
  • There might occasionally be some other activities that are of interest to you, such as with our events team.

This role will suit you if you are …

  • Friendly, helpful and happy to handle money and use a till (basic skills only).
  • Enjoy a front-facing role interacting with visitors.
  • Happy to work.
  • In love with books – even when they’re a little bit dusty!
  • Keen to help each customer feel special and find something they like.

There are both morning and afternoon shifts available for a Saturday. Role is only open to people aged 18 or over.
