As one of the first preserved heritage lines in the country, we boast one of the finest collections of vintage steam locomotives and carriages, many of which were preserved directly from service on British Railways. Our historic line commenced services in August 1960 and today runs steam trains between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead, with stops at Horsted Keynes and Kingscote.

About this opportunity:

The Bluebell Railway, one of the UK’s leading heritage railways, is seeking an experienced Quantity Surveyor (or similarly qualified professional) to support our Infrastructure Department on a voluntary basis. We have many infrastructure projects that need the skills and knowledge of a QS. You will provide cost estimates, assist with tendering, review quotations, monitor project costs, and advise on commercial and contractual matters for a range of infrastructure projects including track renewals and civil engineering works.

The work is estimated as being between two and three days a month and is mostly flexible with much that can be done at home. The railway line runs from Sheffield Park to East Grinstead; our main working areas are at Sheffield Park and Horsted Keynes stations. We are also looking for someone with experience in making planning applications. The roles could be combined.

Why work with us?

  • Contribute professional expertise to a nationally significant heritage railway
  • Work alongside experienced engineers and passionate volunteers
  • Help preserve historic railway infrastructure for future generations
  • Be part of a friendly and committed team

Above all, it is fun and exciting to be part of preserving our railway heritage.

We are looking for someone who:

  • Is experienced as a Quantity Surveyor or similar
  • Has experience in construction, civil engineering, or infrastructure projects
  • Is commercially aware and able to provide pragmatic advice
  • Can work collaboratively with volunteer engineers and project teams
  • Is sympathetic to the aims of heritage preservation

Working time is mostly flexible and much can be done from home, but attendance at points along the railway line is needed and the applicant must have their own personal transport. Expenses are not paid. The opportunity is ongoing and starts from as soon as an applicant is available. The work commitment is flexible and mostly from home, but visits will be required to the railway. It is estimated that the work is 2 or 3 days a month.
