You will lead structural fire resistance assessments and performance‑based fire engineering analyses across a diverse portfolio of commercial, residential, and industrial developments. Alongside your fire engineering specialism, you’ll apply your broader structural engineering expertise to support member design, connection design, load analysis, and technical problem‑solving under ambient conditions. Working closely with engineers, architects, contractors, regulators, and testing laboratories, you’ll play a key role in translating complex engineering challenges into practical, buildable solutions. What You'll Be Doing
- Leading structural fire resistance assessments in accordance with relevant Eurocodes and UK standards
- Developing and reviewing performance‑based fire engineering strategies for complex projects
- Undertaking structural design calculations under ambient conditions for steel, concrete, and masonry structures
- Designing and assessing structural connections and fixing systems under both ambient and elevated temperature conditions
- Providing technical guidance on fire protection requirements and structural fire performance
- Collaborating directly with clients, architects, fire engineers, and regulatory bodies to develop effective engineering solutions
- Supporting technical approvals, product assessments, and technical documentation
- Managing structural fire testing programmes, including furnace testing and interpretation of results
- Working with accredited laboratories and testing organisations throughout the testing and certification process
- Contributing to research, innovation, and the evaluation of emerging technologies and systems
- Advising on evolving UK fire safety legislation and industry developments
- Mentoring junior engineers and fostering a culture of technical excellence and knowledge sharing
Requirements
Essential
- Chartered Engineer status (IStructE, ICE, or equivalent)
- Membership of the Institution of Fire Engineers (IFireE) or equivalent fire engineering qualification
- Strong experience in structural fire engineering, including both prescriptive and performance‑based methodologies
- Proven capability in structural design under ambient conditions using Eurocodes
- Excellent understanding of structural and fire Eurocodes and UK National Annexes
- Experience delivering projects within commercial, residential, or industrial construction sectors
- Strong technical report writing and client‑facing communication skills
- Right to work in the UK
Desirable
- Experience with the fire design of fixings, anchors, channels, and connection systems
- Knowledge of thin‑walled cold‑formed steel behaviour in fire conditions
- Finite Element Analysis (FEA) experience using software such as Abaqus, ANSYS, or similar platforms
- Understanding of ETA‑assessed and UKCA/CE‑marked products and fire performance classifications
- Experience validating digital models against physical fire testing data
- Involvement in research, technical publications, or industry guidance related to structural fire engineering
