We are seeking an experienced Safety Leader for Uber's Autonomous Mobility & Delivery Safety Team to effectively represent Uber's Safety standards and requirements to our partners in Europe. This role requires a strong understanding of autonomous vehicle operations, knowledge of the relevant AV industry standards and deep understanding of the European automotive and AV regulations that inform. The candidate will contribute to regulatory discussions on safety standards and work closely with AV technology and fleet partners to promote adherence to safety protocols, industry standards, and Uber's internal safety practices. This role will require the candidate to become an expert on the European Union and United Kingdom's regulatory frameworks for the deployment of autonomous vehicles and the overall vehicle homologation process.
What You’ll Do
- Subject Matter Expertise: Serve as the strategic expert on EU vehicle type‑approval frameworks—including UN ECE regulations, including EU 2022/1426 and emerging UNECE WP.29 Global Technical Regulation for AVs—to advise partners and internal teams by translating complex technical and regulatory requirements into clear, actionable guidance.
- External Stakeholder Engagement: Collaborate with regulators, technical services, public safety officials, and industry bodies to interpret evolving standards for automated driving systems, ensuring partners' certification pathways are well supported and internal safety and compliance strategies remain aligned with current and anticipated regulations.
- Technical Policy Support: Apply technical understanding of AV safety frameworks to inform and contribute to the development of local safety standards and regulatory guidance. Collaborate with internal teams to ensure alignment with global safety policies.
- AV Tech Partner Onboarding: Lead safety assessments of AV technology partners using Uber's Safety Guidelines for Autonomous Mobility and Delivery, evaluating their organizational, operational, and engineering safety approach to ensure alignment with Uber's safety expectations and industry best practices.
- Fleet Partner Collaboration: Work collaboratively with fleet partners to assure that operational safety requirements are met, maintaining high standards in line with Uber's internal safety guidelines.
- Incident Response: Liaise with various stakeholders, including Uber team members, fleet partners, and regulatory bodies, to manage and coordinate responses to any safety incidents or concerns.
- EU Industry Awareness: Maintain up-to-date knowledge of safety and health trends in the AV and transportation industries in the European Union markets.
- Cross‑functional Leadership: Collaborate with many different skilled individuals across Uber, including business development, fleets, product management, legal, policy, safety operations, marketing, engineering, and regional operations teams.
Basic Qualifications
- Industry Experience: Minimum of 8 years of demonstrated experience in transportation, automotive or autonomous vehicle development.
- Vehicle Regulations: Demonstrated experience with EU automotive safety standards and regulations related to autonomous mobility.
- Transportation Safety Expertise: Familiarity with functional safety, operational safety, safety management systems, safety cases, safety critical software development, and safety data analysis.
- Communication & Relationship Building: Exceptional communication, negotiation, and relationship management skills, with the ability to work across different cultures and industries.
- Understanding of Safety Standards: Familiarity with or experience contributing to discussions within industry standards organizations (e.g., SAE, AVSC, IEEE, ISO) focused on safety and best practices for autonomous vehicles or experience utilizing industry safety standards in practice.
Preferred Qualifications
- Advanced degree in safety, engineering, or related technical fields.
- Experience working in the European markets or a similar regulatory landscape.
- Familiarity with Uber's Safety Guidelines Program and relevant industry standards.
- Experience performing data analysis and statistical analysis of operational safety data to generate safety performance indicators.
- Experience representing a company or industry group in regulatory or policy discussions.
- Demonstrated ability to lead multi‑stakeholder efforts or working groups related to AV safety standards.
- A continuous improvement approach, with a history of quick adaptation and self‑directed learning.
