UBDS Group helps organisations deliver meaningful digital transformations through modern technology and ways of working. In the public sector, we partner with teams to design services that are clear, accessible and built around real user needs.
We’re looking for a Content Designer who cares deeply about language, structure and accessibility and who understands the critical role content plays in helping people successfully use public services.
The Role
As a Content Designer at UBDS, you’ll work within multidisciplinary delivery teams alongside user researchers, designers, product managers and engineers. You’ll design and iterate content that helps users understand services, make decisions and complete tasks with confidence. You’ll apply evidence-based content design practices, test and refine content with users, and ensure services meet GDS standards, accessibility requirements and organisational policies. This is a hands-on role focused on delivering clear, inclusive content that works in real-world public sector contexts.
What You’ll Do
- Design and maintain clear, concise and accessible content for public-facing digital services.
- Use user research and data to shape content decisions and test content with users.
- Work closely with user researchers and designers to understand user needs and service journeys.
- Create and iterate content across Discovery, Alpha, Beta and Live phases.
- Apply GDS content principles and accessibility standards (including WCAG) throughout delivery.
- Structure content logically to support user journeys, decision-making and task completion.
- Collaborate with policy, legal and subject-matter experts to ensure content is accurate, compliant and user-focused.
- Review and improve existing content to reduce complexity and remove unnecessary jargon.
- Contribute to content governance, style guides and patterns where appropriate.
- Support teams through service assessments by clearly articulating content decisions and evidence.
What We’re Looking For
- Experience designing content for public sector or regulated services.
- Strong understanding of content design principles, including plain English and inclusive language.
- Experience using user research to inform and validate content decisions.
- Familiarity with GDS standards, including the Service Standard and content guidance.
- Experience designing content within digital products and services, not just static copy.
- Aware of accessibility, safeguarding and data protection considerations.
Ways of Working
- A strong user-centred mindset and attention to how content affects user behaviour and outcomes.
- Confidence working in multidisciplinary Agile teams.
- Ability to explain and defend content decisions clearly to stakeholders.
- Comfortable working with ambiguity and evolving requirements.
- High attention to detail, including consistency, tone and structure.
- Willingness to iterate content based on evidence, feedback and changing user needs.
