We are looking for experienced Utility Arboricultural Surveyors to join our subcontract network on a self-employed basis. Remuneration is structured to reflect the way you work — day rates, kilometre rates, or a combination — agreed directly with you at the point of engagement. You will be conducting arboricultural surveys along overhead line routes and utility corridors, assessing trees and vegetation for risk, clearance requirements, and network safety compliance.
What the Work Involves
- Arboricultural surveys of trees and vegetation adjacent to overhead power lines and utility infrastructure
- Assessment of clearance distances, species identification, condition, and risk rating
- Production of field survey records using digital capture tools and client-specified data formats
- Works recommendations — identify trees requiring clearance, removal, or cyclical management
- Liaison with landowners and local stakeholders as required
- Compliance with network operator specifications (National Grid, UKPN, and equivalent)
Preferred Skills
- Demonstrable experience in utility arboricultural surveying — overhead lines, DNO, or transmission network environments
- Relevant arboricultural qualification (Level 3 minimum; Degree / HND in Arboriculture or Forestry preferred)
- Working knowledge of BS 5837 and utility vegetation management standards
- Experience with digital field data capture (Collector for ArcGIS, Survey123, or equivalent)
- Full UK driving licence
- Ability to work independently and manage a personal survey programme to deadline
- Professional indemnity insurance and relevant self-employed registrations (or willingness to obtain)
Desirable
- Experience working to National Grid, UKPN, SPEN, SSE or ESB vegetation management frameworks
- Network Rail vegetation management or lineside survey background
- Lantra, ISA, or Arboricultural Association accreditation
- Previous experience working within DNO wayleave or easement constraints
