You will serve as a Naval Architect in the Dry Dock Certification Office (1582), Infrastructure Revitalization and Readiness Division (1580), Naval Shipyard Support Office (1500) of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.

Responsibilities:

  • You will be an engineering specialist in the field of Naval Architecture and Drydocking Technology.
  • You will administer the Safety and Certification Program for Drydocking Facilities and Shipbuilding Ways for U.S. Navy Ships.
  • You will conduct maintenance program audits and provide specialist instructions of drydocking facilities and shipbuilding ways.
  • You will identify technical errors or omissions, ensure compliance with military standards and good engineering practices, and recommend corrective actions or additional data requirements.
  • You will investigate accidents and incidents at certified facilities to determine causes and recommend preventive actions, including procedural or design changes.
  • You will serve as the NAVSEA representative and team leader for audits and inspections.
  • You will review Facility Certification Reports and related documentation.
  • You will provide support to NAVSEA headquarters, fleet, and program offices on all drydocking matters.

Requirements:

  • U.S. Citizen.
  • Suitable for federal employment.
  • Ability to participate in direct deposit pay program.
  • Successful completion of E-Verify employment verification check.
  • Compliance with time-in-grade requirements for federal employees applying for GS jobs.
  • Eligibility for retired military members within 180 days of retirement per 5 U.S.C. 3326.
  • Male applicants born after 12-31-59 must be registered for Selective Service.
  • Position is a bargaining unit role.
  • Requirement to obtain and maintain interim or final security clearance prior to duty; failure may result in withdrawal of offer.
  • Requirement to wear personal protective equipment at all times during the work shift.
  • Position may require travel to CONUS, OCONUS, remote, or isolated sites and flight on military or commercial aircraft for extended periods.
  • Requirement to climb ladders and scaffolding.

Qualifications:

  • At least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-12 grade level.
  • Experience with principles and practices of naval architecture to provide expert advice on design and construction.
  • Experience with mechanical and electrical engineering.
  • Experience executing maintenance project audits and specialized inspections of dry-docking facilities, including material condition surveys and operational tests.
  • Experience conducting comprehensive surveys of structural, mechanical, and electrical systems to guarantee safe operation and system integrity.
  • Experience with drydocking facilities and ship handling systems.
  • Experience with dry dock certification programs.
  • Experience in advanced principles and practices of Naval Architecture for consulting on full range of activities.
  • Experience directing team audits and inspections while reviewing maintenance training and operational procedures for readiness.
  • Experience reviewing and evaluating facilities certification reports to verify compliance with safety standards.
  • Experience creating technical reports and briefings for O‑6/GS‑15 leadership and higher.

Education requirements: Successful completion of a professional engineering degree from an ABET-accredited school or equivalent experience or credential as outlined in the description.
