You will serve as an ENGINEERING TECHNICIAN in the Technical Support Branch, Code 135.1, of the Nondestructive Test Division, Code 135, of the Quality Assurance Office of NORFOLK NAVAL SHIPYARD.
Responsibilities
- You will exercise technical responsibilities for nondestructive testing projects: performing inspections and evaluating specific nonstandard NDT inspections.
- You will provide technical guidance and support to other NOT examiners and other Shipyard personnel, NAVSEA, and contractors, in the use and application of nuclear and nonnuclear NDT procedures.
- You will investigate nuclear and non-nuclear NDT applications for new/changed test requirements and design of new/changed NDT procedures and methods.
- You will represent the Shipyard for all matters related to nuclear and non-nuclear NDT projects in categories such as eddy current, ultrasonic, radiography, magnetic particle, liquid penetrant, and visual.
- You will plan work to be accomplished, determining appropriate work methods and procedures and supporting technical documents.
- You will be responsible for the correct interpretation, procedure development and approval of nuclear and non-nuclear non‑destructive test procedures and training required by NAVSEA directives.

- You will be required to wear personal protective equipment such as helmets, gloves, coveralls, glasses, goggles, respirators, and safety shoes continuously for the duration of the work shift.
- Work is performed in areas where potentially harmful physical and chemical agents are present (e.g., fumes, dust, heat, ionizing and non‑ionizing radiation, and chemicals).
- You will be required to participate in medical surveillance programs.
- This position may require travel from the normal duty station to CONUS and OCONUS and may include remote or isolated sites.
- You must be able to travel on military and commercial aircraft for extended periods of time.
- You will be required to obtain and maintain a current 3 NOT certifications in both nuclear and non‑nuclear NOT disciplines.
Qualifications
- Experience of at least one year of Specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS‑10 grade level or pay band in the Federal service, or equivalent experience in the private or public sector.
- Specialized experience must demonstrate the following:
- Experience applying all phases of inspection techniques used in non‑destructive testing and having the demonstrated ability to make technical evaluations necessary to assure conformance to NAVSEA specifications.
- Experience understanding the theory and operating principles of all the NDT methods and how they interface these methods in solving Shipyard fabrication problems.
- Experience solving complex problems involving use of nuclear and non‑nuclear non‑destructive test methods.
- Experience interpreting specifications, reviewing the work of other personnel to establish proper performance, preparing technical documents, and guiding technical groups and task teams.
